Understand the mathematics behind the standard algorithm for division.
Fluently divide multi-digit numbers in a real world context using the standard algorithm.
Add or subtract decimals using models and relate strategies to the standard algorithm.
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit decimals in a real world context using the standard
algorithm.
Instructional videos in the hyperlinks above are meant to support C2.0 content,
but may use vocabulary or strategies not emphasized by MCPS.
The Common Core State Standards require a balance of three fundamental
components that result in rigorous mathematics acquisition: deep conceptual
understanding, procedural skill, and mathematical applications and modeling.

Divide multi-digit numbers in a real-world context
o The Cupcake Corner sells 20,125 cupcakes a day at
their 23 nationwide locations. How many cupcakes
does each location sell per day?
Model decimal addition and subtraction and explain how
those models relate to the standard algorithm
At home, your child can…
•
Determine how long it would take to walk a certain distance
o The distance across the United States is approximately 3935
miles. How long would it take to walk across the United States
(the average person could walk 20 miles in an 8 hour day)?
o The circumference of the earth is 24,901 miles. How long would it
take to walk around the earth (the average person could walk 20
miles in an 8 hour day)?
o Choose a different location and research the distance.
•
Work with money
o Host a yard sale, bake sale or lemonade stand. Calculate each
customer’s total bill (adding decimals) and change (subtracting
decimals).
•
Calculate split time (the difference in time between two attempts)
o Use a stopwatch or online timer to time themselves performing a
task (like eating a marshmallow or doing ten jumping jacks). After
their second attempt, find the difference between the two times
to measure their improvement.
•
Learn about precision in Olympic timing
o Which athletes or events benefit the most from accurate timing?
