Message from AVID Coordinator
The first semester is over
and the AVID program has
a lot of celebrate.
 88%% of all of our
students to obtain GPA
of a 2.5 or higher
 5% of students
received a referral
 41% received a score
of Proficient/Advanced
on the MAP-R
We have had consistency
with our college tutors
providing support throughout the entire second quarter. While observing the
students’ Tutorial Request
Forms (TRFs), I noticed a
lot of support requested in
the areas of Math and
World Languages. We are
fortunate to have several
math teachers who will devote their time on a biweekly basis to assist our
students with instructional
support. They have requested
that students come prepared
with the completion of their
homework and/or classwork
assignments prior to their
arrival.
Additionally, we have partnered with Paint Branch
High School’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) in
an effort to provide after
school support. On Wednesdays and Thursdays from
4:00p.m-6:00pm. There isn’t
any sign up for any AVID
students. Any AVID student
who is interested in attending
will simply arrive at the Marilyn Praisner Public Library.
Transportation will not be
provided, therefore arrangements will have to be made
in advance. For more information on this opportunity,
please contact the NJHS Coordinator via e-mail at
[email protected].
Fundraiser Update
Our Fundraiser Kickoff started at the beginning of
February and our students are excited about selling
the products from the Popcorn Palace. All money for
the fundraiser will be due on February 29th. If you
have any questions, please let me know.
A Spring Dance has been planned for Friday, March
11th, however the students were informed that it will
be contingent upon how well they sell the Popcorn
.
Palace products.
Finally, I want to share with you
how pleased I am in the effort
that students have displayed in
excelling in WICOR strategies:
 Writ ing
 Inquiry
 Collaboration
 Organization
 Reading
They have made significant progress, yet more attention is needed in the areas of Writing and
Organization. I will continue to
consult with the English Department for additional strategies to
assist the AVID students with
writ ing. In terms of organization,
many students have made significant improvements, however
there are quite a few that are in
need of a new binder. Please
reexamine the condition of their
binder as soon as possible. As
always, I’m content with the
progress thus far, but I can only
anticipate even greater results
for the 3rd quarter!
