August Update
Hello Westbrook Families,
The start of school year is just around the corner! Here are a few important logistical details to keep in
mind. This year our school day will begin at 9:00 am, and it will end at 3:25 pm.
Students may arrive at school as early as 8:40. Staff will be in place to supervise at that time.
 Kindergarten and 3rd grade students gather on the upper playground, near the Kindergarten
classrooms.
 Grades 1, 2 and 4 gather on the paved play area
 Grade 5 gather near the main entrance
At 8:45 we will form lines and begin to move into the building. Teachers will meet and escort their
classes for the first weeks of school. Once the routine is established 5th grade safety patrols will escort
students into the building. On the first day of school this process may take us a bit longer, however on
subsequent days we will strive to make sure that all students are in the classroom by 8:50 to unpack and
get settled for the day’s opening announcements at 9:00am.
Students who arrive after 8:45 should enter through front entrance to the school. Parents are requested to
say goodbye outside of the building. Westbrook staff members are present, and they will help students
who require assistance in finding their classroom.
If children arrive after 9:00am they are considered “tardy”. An adult should escort them into the building,
and sign them in at the main office.
In case of inclement weather; walkers and car riders should enter the door closest to their arrival location,
either the front door, or the doors near the gym. Grades K-2 line up in the gym, and Grades 3-5 line up in
the All Purpose Room. For security reasons parents are requested to say goodbye outside or at the
entrance to the building. Westbrook staff members are present, and they will help students who require
assistance in finding their line-up area.
We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that your child use his/her “typical” arrival and dismissal method on the
first day of school. This is so that both your child and their teacher can begin to work successfully with
the new routine.
Please make sure that your child knows how s/he gets home from school. Send your child to school with
this information in writing. For students in grades K-2 it is suggested that you attach this information to
your child’s clothing and include a second copy in his/her backpack. This can be done using an index
card and a safety pin, a sticky label, or even a large piece of masking tape. It is vital to include the
following information: Your child’s first and last name, Grade Level, Homeroom teacher if possible, and
transportation information such as Walker, WCC after care, or Bus Route. Be sure to let us know if your
child arrives and leaves in
different
ways. For example:
Sammy Student
1st grade
Mrs. Kim
AM: Bus 1119 (Whale Bus)
PM: WCC after care
At Dismissal time bus riders are dismissed under the supervision of staff and safety patrols. Walkers are
escorted out of the building by their teachers. Teachers have been requested to communicate with the
adult picking up students in Grades K-2. In this way we are sure that your child has someone present to
meet them. If no one is there to meet a Grade K-2 walker at dismissal, the teacher will walk your child
back to the main office, and you will be contacted. Walking students in grades 3-5 are dismissed once
they exit the building. Please arrange a convenient meeting spot if you will pick your child up each day.
There is no carpool line at dismissal, so please plan enough time to park your car in a legal spot and walk
to the dismissal area.
 Kindergarten and 3rd grade students will exit onto the upper playground, where they line up in the
morning.
 1st and 2nd grade students will exit onto the paved play area; where they line up in the morning.
 4th and 5th grade students will exit through the front doors of the building.
Our homeroom class rosters will be posted in the evening on Thursday, August 27th. We look forward to
seeing you at one of the following events.
