WESTBROOK EAGLE NEWS December 2015 Westbrook Elementary School 5110 Allan Terrace Bethesda, Maryland 20816 301-320-6506 Principal Jennifer Lane Email address [email protected] School Web Site http://montgomerysc hoolsmd.org/ schools/westbrookes/ WINTER IS HERE. Seasons Greetings from the Staff Amidst the busy winter holidays season we pause to reflect on all that we are grateful for. We take time to treasure joy, happiness and time with family and friends. The Westbrook staff joins me in thanking you for your ongoing support and generosity. We wish you all the best this holiday season and in 2016! LATE ARRIVALS Students are expected to arrive at school on time. Our staff is on duty to supervise students as they arrive starting at 8:40am. Students should not be dropped off at Westbrook prior to 8:40am unless they are enrolled in an Enrichment Academy before school class. Students who arrive after 8:45 should enter through the front doors near the main office and walk directly to class. A student who arrives after 9:00am is considered late and needs to be signed in by a parent or guardian. ALL teachers, including KINDERGARTEN teachers are asked NOT to open their doors once the class has entered and the door is locked. If students arrive after the scheduled arrival time, please walk with your child to the main office and sign your child in. Only adults may sign a student in. The office staff will check if your child needs to order lunch and then give the child a pass to go to class. Students then will be directed to their classroom or escorted by a staff member if needed. This ensures minimal disruption to the learning environment. PLEASE make sure your children are appropriately dressed for the weather. We go outside every day for recess unless the temperature is BELOW 30 degrees or it is raining. Label coats, mittens, scarves and hats. Check the lost and found if your child doesn’t come home in the afternoon with all of the warm garments he or she was wearing at arrival! EMAIL Please remember that staff may take up to two school days to respond to parent emails. Our main focus is on your child’s learning. Teachers need to be with students during the day and your emails deserve a thoughtful response. You may also choose to email your child’s teacher to arrange a phone or face to face conference when DO YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN FOR YOUR FAMILY? Sometimes weather, power outages, or local emergencies can unexpectedly dismiss students from school before the regular time. It is important that you create a plan for your family if this happens. Will your children go to daycare, home with a neighbor, or follow their regular routine? Please consider the best plan for your family and communicate this to the classroom teacher now so that we are prepared as the winter draws near. Early dismissal announcements are made by 11:00am and can be found on the MCPS website as well as on local news outlets. If you are signed up for MCPS Quick notes, you will receive direct notification as requested. On Early Dismissal days our PM PEP students do not attend school. LEAVING EARLY FOR VACATION? Please be sure to send an email to your child’s classroom teacher and copy Barbara Kahn. This is important for our record keeping and avoids a phone call to you from our system about the absence. Missed classwork and homework are not typically provided in advance for students missing school for travel or vacation; according to MCPS regulations these are unexcused absences. Teachers will provide students an opportunity to make up missed work when they return. Please contact Ms. Lane if you have a question about a unique family travel situation. When a student will be absent for several days because of illness please let the teacher know if you would like to make arrangements to send work home. When a child is absent only one day for illness, work will be provided upon return to school. PARCC—Program of Assessment for College and Career This year students in grades 3-5 will once again take the PARCC test. Last year all students in grades 3-5 participated in PARCC testing, and score reports for students in Grade 4 and Grade 5 were mailed home by MCPS the week of December 7. Please contact us if you did not receive a report, or if you have specific questions about interpreting your child’s score report. This year we will begin our PARCC testing in May. Once it is approved by the MCPS Testing Office a more detailed schedule will go home during second semester. Information on PARCC testing is available on the MCPS website if you would like to learn more.
