October 13, 2014 Roberto Clemente Extended Day Program Dear Parents/Guardians: In accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act, all Maryland students in Grades 3–8 are expected to be proficient in English/reading and mathematics. In order to increase student success, Montgomery County Public Schools is offering extended day programs at each middle school to provide extended instructional time for students who want to accelerate their learning, strengthen their skill base, and enhance their content knowledge of curriculum as assessed by grades, MAP-R and MAP-M test scores. The program will provide reading or mathematics instruction for students who have not been successful with MCPS English/reading or mathematics curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the MAP test. Classes will consist of a review of concepts that students will experience in the 2014-2015 school year. Your child has been identified as a candidate for the following extended day support course: Mathematics Support ___ 6th grade ___ 7th grade ___ 8th grade The intervention classes will be held three afternoons starting the week of November 3 and run for no more than 25 sessions ending the week of March 5 with a break in December and January. The program will meet directly after supper in the cafeteria as part of the Excel Beyond the Bell program. Supper will be served from 2:45 to 3:00. Classes will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m. and will end at 4:15 p.m. Students in this program will be eligible for activity bus transportation if they live within the designated route areas. This will ONLY occur if the student has completed a registration form for the Excel Beyond the Bell program and will participate in either a study hall or computer lab session after the Extended Day class is concluded for the day. There will be approximately 15-20 students in each of the EDP classes. This is decided on a first come first serve basis. To obtain maximum benefit from this program, your child needs to be present every day. Teachers will distribute scheduled class days on the first day and post on the RCMS website. Excessive absences will not only minimize the program effectiveness it will affect other potential candidates from an opportunity to participate. To register for the Extended Day Program, please complete the permission form attached. Return the completed form to the Extended Day Coordinator (Mrs. Laura Crittenden) by October 24, 2014. Include your child’s full name, student ID number, and remaining information to ensure enrollment. We look forward to working with your child. Sincerely, Mrs. Khadija Barkley
