Students’ Guide to Family Connection/Naviance
Applying to college? Applying for scholarships? Be sure to follow these steps for success!
1. COMPLETE “The Senior Packet” - Available in Counseling Services or on school website, “Senior
Packet.” Submit to REGISTRAR.
2.
SIGN IN TO YOUR FAMILY CONNECTION ACCOUNT - Type clarksburghs in the search
engine or visit www.mcpsmd.org – search CHS, College and Career Center (Left side), Click on family
connection in the blue box (middle of the page).
3. SEARCH FOR COLLEGES THAT MATCH YOUR INTERESTS
a. Click “Colleges” and “Super Match college search”
b. Using the links to your left, select different criteria you are looking for in a College/University
c. Click on add “Colleges I am thinking about”
4.
RECORD YOUR COLLEGES
a. All Colleges listed in “Colleges I am thinking about” can be moved to “Colleges I am applying
to”
b. OR
c. Click “Colleges,” then “Colleges I’m Applying To” and add your colleges
5. REVIEW PRIVACY NOTICE FOR STUDENTS APPLYING TO COLLEGES THAT ACCEPT
THE COMMON APPLICATION (CA)
a. Please follow the instructions on the following pages

i. Log into our Family Connection account
ii. Click the College tab and watch the video
6. NOTE THE SYMBOLS
a. Click “Colleges,” and “College Look Up” (6th link down), then find a college.

b. If a college accepts the Common Application you will see a
on the college page at the
bottom where you see “Application Deadline.”
 When the college accepts the Common Application, you must complete the Common
Application, so that your teacher recommendation(s), counselor recommendation, and official
transcript can be send electronically through Family Connection! There is no need to send the
forms through the US Mail unless you elect not to use Common Application!
c. If a college does NOT accept the Common Application, you will see a
(empty box) on
the college page at the bottom where you see “Application Deadline.”
 This means that your college accepts electronic submission. Therefore, CHS can still send
your teacher recommendation(s), counselor recommendation and transcript electronically
through Family Connection/Naviance and there is no need to send the forms through the US
Mail!
d. If a college does NOT accept e-docs or the CA, you will see a box with a stamp,
which means that the transcript, counselor recommendation, and teacher recommendation must
be MAILED.
 Provide Registrar with 2 stamps per application.
 Provide your teacher(s) with an addressed stamped envelope to your College/University
Admission office.
7. COMPLETE “OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT REQUEST” FORM - This PAPER form is required for
EVERY college or scholarship for which you are applying. It must be submitted to the REGISTRAR
regardless of whether your documents are sent electronically or through the mail.

SEEK HELP - If you have questions or need more information, visit the College and Career Center or
see your counselor.
9. VISIT WITH COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES AT CHS - On the Family Connection homepage,
click “Colleges” and “View all upcoming college visits,” then click “Sign up” and print the pass for your
teachers. Attendance is taken.
10. VISITING SCHOOLS - If you plan to visit a college, it is suggested that you make an appointment for
an interview. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will allow three excused school days for
seniors to visit colleges providing permission has been granted from teachers and the principal in
advance.

Please be sure to hand in the completed forms below (except Teacher Recommendation Sheet)
to the Registrar at the same time.
____ STUDENT BRAG SHEET – Use this form to provide information about yourself to aid
the counselor in writing your letter of recommendation.
____ PARENT/GUARDIAN BRAG SHEET – Have a parent/guardian complete this form; also to
be used to assist the counselor in writing your letter of recommendation.
____ EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES CHECKLIST – Complete all pertinent information.
____ GRADUATION/DIPLOMA ORDER – Use this form to provide diploma information. Submit
to the registrar by October
15, 2015.
____ PLEASE SEE TEACHER FOR RECOMMENDATION SHEET – Give stamped envelope
addressed to the college/university (if requested).
____ TRANSCRIPT RELEASE FORM (blue) – Use this form to record all college applications.
Note that this requires a parent/guardian signature. It should be submitted with your
first transcript request to the registrar. Please remember your stamps and fees.
NAVIANCE QUESTION – Have you entered your colleges into Naviance: __ Yes __ No
FERPA/COMMON APPLICATION – Once you have started you must complete.

1. Once you create a common application account using your email address and a password. (per Common
Application directions)
2. Compete the personal information.
3. In the education section, please enter Clarksburg High School.
4. Add at least one college to your common application.
5. From within “my colleges”, click on assign recommender, one of two things will populate.
a. The page will populate with the word FERPA in the first section. Click on the word FERPA and
answer the questions.
6. Go back to your family connection account and go into “colleges I am applying to” and enter your
Common Application Email Address and make sure your Date of Birth is correct.
Once entered click on the match button.
7. If you see matched you can proceed with the application process.
8. If you get a red banner stating that your information can not be matched, please try the process again
making sure you are using the same email used for the common application and your date of birth is
correct.

9. If you are not using the common application please go into your family connection account. Click on
“colleges I am applying to” and click the red Not Needed
