What's the Buzz in Third Grade? Curriculum Corner READING: Wayside Elementary School May/June 2016 Third graders have learned a great deal about traditional stories which include folktales, myths, legends, and fables. After discussing the plot of the stories and determining the theme using our inference skills, students will move onto literary non-fiction texts. Additionally, we will discover how autobiographies, journals, and blogs help to communicate information. The year will finish off with a favorite activity of the students which is journal reading/writing. In Writer’s Workshop the third graders researched the pros and cons of having zoos. They learned some fascinating and shocking facts along the way. After the completion of our informational paragraph explaining both sides of the issue, students will take a stance and write an opinion paragraph explaining how they feel about zoos making sure to use the facts from their research to support their opinion. The remainder of the year will be spent on some work with narrative writing. MATH: SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: Throughout this marking period, your child will study plants and animals and how living things depend on the accessibility of Earth’s natural resources. We will look at habitats and different environments as well as identify natural resources as renewable, nonrenewable, and inexhaustible. We will explore how humans use natural resources, change them into products we need, and how they meet our needs. We will also identify materials that can be recycled and how humans reuse materials to benefit the environment. Students will learn how technology plays a role in all of this and how it impacts our environments and the way we live. In social studies we will examine money management strategies. The next few weeks we will discuss creating and monitoring a budget. Students will have an opportunity to develop a budget to use when taking care of a pet. Students will then become producers of a good and explore the impact of resources and technology on producers and consumers. Third graders learned how to determine the perimeter of figures. They have also identified and classified different types of quadrilaterals. We have been telling time on a clock as well as representing and solving addition word problems involving time using number line diagrams. Then, we will represent a data set with several categories in a pictograph and scaled bar graph. In addition, we will explore volume, capacity and mass for measurement. We will finish the year by revisiting 2-step word May problems and with reviewing multiplication and May 12-13 & May 16 division.
