Wabasha Farmers Market and Wabasha-Kellogg School District unite to serve our children

Wabasha County SHIP Farm-to-School Project
Wabasha Farmers Market and
Wabasha-Kellogg School District
Unite to Serve our Children
The Freshest of Produce Coming to Our Schools
New Partnerships Developed in
Wabasha County through Statewide
Health Improvement Program (SHIP)
A SHIP Community Leadership Team (CLT) was formed
and first met in February of 2014. Amazing effort
was put forward and huge results were obtained.
With five months remaining until Implementation
begins, the team held six meetings. Much information
was absorbed by all about Wabasha County, SHIP,
and the populations to serve. Through the CLT’s
knowledge, they guided us in reaching out to the new
potential partners who would target our county’s
areas with the greatest health inequities and
disparities. Strategically working on eight SHIP
strategies, we received mini grant applications for
four strategies. Through providing technical support
while producing the Healthy Eating mini grant
applications, emerged the conversation of farm-toschool. Two partners were united and progress has
already been made!
Wabasha County SHIP supports farm-to-school right
here in Wabasha. Watch as your children delight in
farm fresh fruits and vegetables. Communication will
be essential in this relationship. Be ready for change
as Sara George, Market Manager, has thoroughly
thought through this process. Vendors announce their
bounty early in the week. Wabasha-Kellogg school
district is informed of the colorful selection available.
Vendors align their efforts in filling the order and
happy students delight in fun freshness. Not only will
fresh fruits and produce be served, healthy home
cooked recipes will be made available through SHIP’s
support in purchasing food processing equipment.
