First Grade News!
February
Important Dates to
Remember
Half Way There!
It is hard to believe, but we have almost successfully
completed the first 100 days of school and our students are
now preparing for second grade! In order to ensure that
your child is prepared, please continue to read every night.
Also, please continue to review Math homework that your
child brings home in their journal. Remember to talk with
your child about his/her day and the exciting things that
have been learned. Thank you for continuing to support
your child’s education

Reading and Writing
This quarter students will be focusing on comprehension of informational texts. They will be
learning how to ask questions about meaning of words or phrases. They will also be looking
at similarities and differences between texts. Vocabulary continues to be an important part
of our curriculum. Students will be clarifying unknown and multiple meaning words. For
speaking and language, students will focus on collaborative conversations. For Writing,
students will be focusing on the question “what is in in place?” They will be researching a
specific place in the media center, taking notes, and then using those notes to create 3
pieces of writing: Informative paragraph, informative poem, and an opinion piece on the
best place to visit.
Math
This quarter students will focus
on measurement. They will be
comparing and ordering
objects by length. They will
also continue to practice one
and two digit addition. Please
continue to practice the
addition and subtraction facts
and review any math work
that comes home with your
child.
Science
Students will be identify materials that make
up natural features of Earth’s surface.
They will also be learning and discussing
human actions that harm the environment.
Social Studies
Students will begin identifying physical
characteristics of a place. Students will also
be focusing on ways to adapt and protect
our environment.
