NCCECO- SCHOOLS
Highest Distinction Possible
Dear North Chevy Chase Elementary School Families,
Happy March! Thank you for coming to so many school
activities last month. As a member of our school
community, please let
us know if there is
anything you need
from us. On March
3rd, our third graders started PARCC testing. Fourth and fifth grades
began on Tuesday, March 10th. PARCC testing will continue through
March. The changed schedule is a result of the snow days. Our
student are doing an incredible job and we are very proud of their
hard work! The staff at NCC is dedicated to promoting positive
behavior in all school settings. We have three school-wide
expectations which are reinforced daily. These expectations are
simple and consistent for our students. At NCC we expect students to
be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn each day. Please help
us reinforce these expectations with your children at home. On
Friday, March 13th a special awards ceremony was held at NCC.
Ambassador Lyu-shun Shen from Taiwan, along with representatives
from the National Wildlife Federation, EPA, State Department,
Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education,
were hosts to launch the National Wildlife Federation Eco-Schools
program. North Chevy Chase Elementary, a Maryland Green School,

Dear Parents,
T he N ational Science Foundation developed
several ST EM programs (Science Technology
Engineering M athematics) initiatives for
students K-12 in an effort to increase student
interest and provide an integrated curriculum in
these areas that would advance ST EM education
in the 21st century and solidify American
competitiveness worldwide.
In an effort to provide an opportunity for our
students to participate in this movement, this
year, N CC will host its first ever ST EM
(Science Technology Engineering M athematics)
Day. T his event is scheduled to take place on
Earth Day, April 22, 2015.
As a part of our planning process, we are
looking to our ST EM parent community to
Volunteer. If you are in the Science,
Technology, Engineering or M athematics field
or you use these expertise in your career, we are
looking for you!!
As a ST EM day volunteers, they were asked to
create a presentation about your area of
expertise (career) along with a hands on
component. Your presentations and diverse
ST EM backgrounds will pique the students
natural interest in science! Please consider
volunteering for this important event that will
demonstrate to kids the wonders of ST EM and
the endless possibilities it provides throughout
every aspect of our daily lives.
T hank you for helping make N CC a great
place to learn and grow!
All parents who have volunteered, in ANY
capacity at NCC, are invited to attend the
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast (consider
this your invitation).
Each year, NCC staff hosts a bountiful
breakfast for all parent volunteers. This is
the same day as NCC?s 8th Annual Career
Day so all Career Day speakers (also parent
Volunteers) will be in attendance. This is a
great way for you parents to be recognized
for all you do to make NCC run so smoothly!
Some possible ways you might have

Student Service Learning Notes
March 2015
Reminders for Students/ Parents:
Spring Break is a good time to ?Give a Little
Time? and Make a Big Difference? AND earn
SSL hours. Be sure to look for the graduation
cap icon on the website www.mcpsssl.org in
the SSL Community Opportunities section to
ensure the organization is MCPS SSL
Approved.
With an approved MCPS Form 560-50,
students may earn SSL hours with for-profit
travel companies that provide service
opportunities in addition to the travel. In
order for the preapproval to be considered,
the 560-50 form must identify the types of
planned service activities and the estimated
number of SSL hours. Remember: a
maximum of 8 SSL hours may earned in a 24
hour period and only the service activity
portion of the trip is eligible to earn SSL
hours.
All organizations and opportunities not
identified with the graduation cap icon on
the website require advanced approval of
MCPS Form 560-50 Individual SSL Request by
the SSL coordinator.
All documentation for 2015 MCPS SSL
Awards is due to the SSL coordinator no later
than Thursday, March 26, 2015. Reflections
written by students on MCPS Form 560-51
become part of the student?s permanent
record. Students are encouraged to take the
necessary time to write a legible and
comprehensive paragraph regarding their
SSL experience.
