HCH Results: Patient
Experience of Care
2012 Patient Experience Survey Results
Nate Hunkins
Account/Program Manager
Background
 Clinics that hit a threshold of unique adult patients seen with face-toface visits in the 2011 three-month period were required to take part in
the measure.
• Exclusions were pediatric/adolescent only or
psychiatry practices and those clinics not hitting
threshold.
• Tool was the CG- CAHPS Visit survey, version 2.0
MN Community Measurement
• Patient Experience of Care was a required
measure in 2012 for MN physician clinics.

•
•
•

Data Analysis Process
• Publically Reported Results: Statewide Risk
Adjusted: Data case-mix adjusted on age, education, and selfreported health status using ALL survey results
• HCH Risk Adjusted Results: Data case-mix adjusted on
age, education, and self-reported health status using ONLY HCH
clinic site results
• Publically reported results needed to meet minimum
thresholds at 0.7 reliability per domain
MN Community Measurement
• For comparison purposes 2 sets of results were
calculated for HCH sites
4
• Defined as the minimum number of returned surveys
required per clinic per domain for 0.7 reliability in the
data
• Differs between the HCH risk adjusted and publically
reported risk adjusted
MN Community Measurement
Reliability: Minimum Thresholds
5
Reliability Results: HCH Risk Adjusted vs.
Publically Reported
• Less HCH clinics achieve .7 reliability using the HCH risk adjusted results
• See table below for comparison between the # of clinics meeting
reliability when comparing the two different sets of results
MN Community Measurement
• 211 HCH clinics participated in the survey
6
Results
• HCH Clinics have two sets of risk adjusted results for each
question and domain of the patient experience survey
• For nearly all clinics there is a slight difference between the
two different set of results. For example, an Allina clinic
scored a 62.82% on the Access domain for the publicly
reported results, however, their HCH risk adjusted results for
the Access domain was 62.74%.
• On average for the Access domain there is +.18% difference
between a clinic’s publically reported result and their HCH risk
adjusted result
MN Community Measurement
• HCH risk adjusted Results
• Publically reported risk adjusted results
7
Average Results Per Domain
MN Community Measurement
• There was little variation when comparing the
average results for the HCH Risk Adjusted Results
to the publically reported results
8
• The Ratings are the significance of the comparison of a
clinic’s overall average to all clinics and to only HCH
clinics.
• HCH clinics will 2 significance ratings, one rating
compares them to the publicly reported results, the
other compares them to only HCH clinics
 Signified by 1,2, or 3 stars
 Clinics with 3 stars have an overall average significantly above the
average rate of all clinics and/or all HCH clinics
 Clinics with 2 stars have an overall average rate at the average rate of all
clinics and/or all HCH clinics
 Clinics with 1 stars have an overall average rate below the average rate of
all clinics and/or all HCH clinics

Significance Ratings Per Domain:
HCH and Publically Reported

Significance Ratings Example:
MN Community Measurement
• Overall, 9 HCH clinics had a different significance rating
for the Access domain.

Discussion: HCH Data Portal
• What are the pros and cons of potentially using two different sets of results
(publically reported vs. HCH risk adjusted)
• Which star rating system should be used for benchmarking (publically
reported vs. HCH risk adjusted)?
• Is it appropriate to use both?
• MNCM would recommends removing the star rating from clinics that do not
meet the reliability thresholds
MN Community Measurement
• Which results (HCH only results or publically reported) should be displayed
in the HCH Portal?
