Inside Third Grade November 16-20, 2015 Common Core Curriculum In Third Grade, we are still: Using poetic terminology (ex. stanza, line) when discussing the parts of a narrative poem. Comparing poems, including themes, citing examples from the poems in the discussion. Reading plays, and discussing character actions and resulting events, and themes. Representing multiplication situations in the 4’s, 8’s, 9’s, and 3’s tables using models, pictures, arrays, and equations. Using models, pictures, and arrays to show situations where we might need to divide a group into equal parts and representing it as an equation. Writing narratives (stories and poems) that include at least a simile and/or other figures of speech and all other plot elements (character(s), setting, problem/ conflict, solution, and events. Noticing how the meanings of word parts change when a prefix or suffix is added to a root word. Observing and describing characteristics of an object, and predicting how it might change. Reading about and discussing emergency plans that can help to prepare in the event of a natural disaster or unexpected situation. Reviewing important information to know and discuss with family members (including emergency contact numbers, address, and “safe” people to contact in the event of an emergency/unforeseen situation). Teachers’ Corner: It was great to meet with so many of you at the Parent Conferences last week. If you were unable to attend your conference, please let us know if you have any questions resulting from the review of your child’s Report Card or the other materials within their envelope. This Tuesday, our students will be asked to turn in their completed Reading Log. The students will also have a Math Fact Quick Quiz on Wednesday. This is just one of many ways we are encouraging students to practice their basic facts and set goals. If you are looking for other practice opportunities for your child in Reading or Math, don’t forget that our students have access to the Google accounts from home. They simply need to go to Google.com, and enter your child’s log-in and password. Many students already know these, but if you need a copy, just send in a note and we’ll have your child write it in his/her planner. From your child’s account, he/she can access the Google Drive as well as the apps we use in class, including Google Classroom, for links to online Tumblebooks and other online resources. Looking ahead, we will be assigning a 1-week Word Study unit on prefixes, including practice activities to complete at home, and a follow-up test on Tuesday, Nov. 24th.
