Inside Third Grade November 9-13, 2015 In the Common Core Curriculum we are: Use the poetic terminology (line, stanza) in reference to the parts of a narrative poem. Asking and answering inferential questions when referring to the text. Determining the theme of a play or short story (a life lesson that the characters can/did learn which can be applied to “real” life). Identify cause/effect relationships. Representing multiplication situations and products using models, pictures, arrays, and equations. Using models, pictures, and arrays to show situations where we might need to divide a group into equal parts and representing it as an equation. Brainstorming topics for narrative stories and using a pictorial storyboard to organize our ideas. Writing descriptive sentences to elaborate on an idea (from our narrative storyboards). Discussing and identifying ways that bystanders can help in a bullying situation. Classifying goods and services, and explaining our decision. Teachers’ Corner: This is our second year to have Chromebooks in the Third Grade, and the first year for the current students to have 1:1 access to the technology daily at school. During the first marking period, we have: -learned how to log into our Google accounts -download an approved app from the MCPS Chrome Store -created a document using Google Docs and Google Slides -recorded a story using Voice Recorder -log into our Google Classroom sites, add classes, complete classwork, and turn it in (Please don’t panic if you see a “late” assignment when looking at the assigned work on Google Classroom before November; we, teachers, were learning how to use this app, too.) Your child can log into these accounts from home to share their work with you and/or to access apps and links to websites we use in class (from Google Classroom) including online books at the Tumblebooks site. Ask your child to show you what we’ve been learning. Just be mindful-- we aren’t experts yet. How do you know when to divide? What do you think I should ask / share with your teacher at our conference? Why? How have you used the Chromebooks in your classroom? If we log into your Google Classroom account, would you show me how you get to Tumblebooks? How do you prefer to find the answer to a division problem—an array, model, or picture? Why? As you start Marking Period, what do you think you could do better? How can we (your teacher and I) help you in meeting this goal? What homework do you have tonight? Show me.
