Inside Third Grade October 5-9, 2015 Common Core Curriculum We are: Making connections to describe cause and effect relationships. Asking and answering questions by explicitly referring to the text for answers. Choosing an “expert” topic to write about, considering our audience and questions they might have, and write about the topic. Applying context clues from immediately around the word/phrase to determine the word’s meaning. Subtracting within 1000 (across zeros) and explain relationships among strategies and algorithms. Adding and subtracting within 1000 with unknowns in all positions using strategies and algorithms. Identifying variables when comparing the speeds or distances traveled by objects, and designing an experiment that will limit the number of variables present. Observing and describing what may have caused a change in an object’s motion. Things to Ask Your Child: What topic are you writing about for your Expert piece? Teachers’ Corner: This is a very busy week with important assignments and dates to track. First, the Book Fair continues to be open through Wednesday morning of this week. There are special “late” hours on Tuesday prior to the first PTA Meeting. Interim reports were sent home today (Monday). Please note that grades reflect how your child has been doing in a particular area up to this point. However, because of the sequence of the curriculum, not all areas have been taught yet this marking period and have a grade reported. (ex. Opinion writing, nonfiction reading, history, or economics for example are not taught until later in the marking period so no grade may be reported at this time.) Tuesday is Picture Day at Woodfield, and forms have been sent home for your child to order pictures if wanted. All students will have their picture taken regardless of an order form. Tuesday is also the day the Reading Log and questions are due. This is a friendly reminder that your child’s Math Fact Family Worksheet and Quiz will be this Wednesday. Each child will need to return the handout with spots for two parent/guardian signatures stating the student has studied the 6’s and 7’s addition/subtraction fact families twice since last Wednesday when the homework was assigned. Wednesday is also Walk to School Day. Children are invited to meet at the Plantations Pool and walk to school that morning. Last Friday, your child brought home his/her first Word Study/Spelling List where he/she was asked to study 10-15 words, and complete some homework assignments to practice for a follow-up assessment this Friday, October 9th. We will continue practicing in class this week in preparation for Friday’s test. The Word Study Packet will also be due on Friday. Important Academic Dates to Remember: Oct. 5- Interim Reports come home for all students; Book Fair Open OCT. 6- Reading Log due (Both sides); Picture Day today; Book Fair Open late tonight; PTA Meeting Oct. 7- Math Quick Quiz Worksheet is due; Math Quick Quiz today over 6’s and 7’s; Walk Your Child to School Day; Last morning for Book Fair Oct. 9- Spelling/Word Work homework packet due; Word Study test today PLEASE send your child’s green READ-A-THON form every day with your initials indicating how much he/she read the previous night. Our PTA is tracking progress and awarding prizes daily! What strategy do you prefer to use when subtracting and decomposing— drawing a picture, using a manipulative like blocks, the break-apart strategy, subtracting a number and adding it back in at the end, the algorithm, or another strategy? Show me how you solve a problem using this method.
