Using a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root, and reviewing the placement and role of prefixes and suffixes in determining a word’s meaning. Publishing Narrative stories as podcasts using the Voice Recorder app Brainstorming and discussing possible research topics Applying context clues from immediately around the word/phrase to determine the word’s meaning. Evaluating whether it is necessary to decompose in a subtraction problem and then subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms. Suggesting possible causes for changes in the motion of objects as they move across different textured surfaces, and model them. Demonstrating how gravity works, designing a track, and using materials to carry out the investigation. Observing and describing what may have caused a change in an object’s motion. Teachers’ Corner: This week we will introduce two new long-term homework components—Math and Word Study. Later this week, the students will bring home a Math letter than will explain how we will be focusing on two fact families each week to review and improve our speed and accuracy. This ongoing basic fact practice will require you to initial that your child practiced his/her facts twice. Our first Math Quick Quiz assignment is due Wed., Oct. 7. In addition, we will be sending home our first Word Study homework packet at the end of the week focusing on some of the spelling changes that occur to nouns when they are made plural. The packet which will come home on Friday will include homework practice, along with specific words for your child to study. The Word Study packet will be due the day of the quiz: Friday, Oct 9th. This Word Study packet will also include a cover sheet with addition details. Finally, our Woodfield students will be bringing home Interim Reports next week. Please look for these reports which will include information about how your child is performing on the Third Grade academic content and Thinking and Academic Success Skills at this point in the marking period. There will be a few areas that may not yet be reported because we have not yet taught those indicators at this point in the marking period. For example, informative and persuasive writing are areas we are just now beginning to assess so we won’t have scores to report at this time. Despite this, we are sending home Interim Reports to all parents to further underscore our commitment to communicating with you, our partners in education.
