Tri-M Chapter 513 Program Guidelines
2011-2012
Dear Student Musician:
We, the music faculty at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, invite you to apply for membership in Tri-M Chapter 513. Tri-M,
or Modern Music Masters, is a music honor society in which you may gain membership for your music-related accomplishments.
Tri-M members are selected for their exceptional scholarship, leadership, service, and character. In order for you to be considered
for induction into Chapter 513, the music department invites you to verify the following criteria:

Music Participation – Junior or Senior candidates may be inducted. Candidates must have been enrolled for a
minimum of three semesters of ensemble performance classes by the beginning of their Junior year. After selection
and induction, students must enroll for at least one semester of ensemble class during each of their Junior and
Senior years. Additionally, students must currently be enrolled in an ensemble to qualify for membership.
Grades / Scholarship – Candidates must have maintained a high school grade point average of at no less than 3.0
for all music classes and 2.0 for all classes combined.
Leadership / Service – Candidates must meet at least five of the twelve benchmarks listed below:
o Audition for All-County ensemble
o Audition for All-State ensemble
o Perform in the school pit orchestra
o Participate in a chamber or specialty ensemble (i.e. barbershop vocal group or string quartet) for one semester
with a minimum of five rehearsals with the teacher
o Perform at Solo and Ensemble Festival
o Perform or serve as a committee member at the Music Department Cabaret
o Take private lessons
o Be enrolled in an ensemble every semester of high school
o Be enrolled as an IB Music candidate
o Perform as a wind or percussion player with the full orchestra
o Serve as a section leader and/or assist with sectional rehearsals or coaching
o Participate in at least two department fundraisers
o Attend at least one spring music trip
o Tutor elementary, middle, or high school students in their musical disciplines
Character – Candidates must have perfect attendance at all scheduled performances. In addition, the following
criteria must be evidenced by the candidate:
o Sets an example of good citizenship
o Follows school policies and procedures
o Willing to accept responsibility
o Respectful of others and their property
o Honest
o Reliable
o Punctual
o Truthful
o Patient
o Understanding
**Please submit the following items for review to Mrs. Martin no later than Monday, September 26. Clearly label
all materials with your name and student ID number.
 1 copy of your current transcript OR copies of all report cards to date.
 Mark the applicable criteria on the Leadership/Service section above. (Please mark it on this form.) Read and
sign the back of this form if you agree to the rules and expectations of Tri-M.
 At least one recommendation letter using the attached form

Tri-M Rules and Expectations
1. “I will attend all regularly scheduled meetings.” Meetings are the first Monday (at
school) of every month, during lunch, in the Band Room. If you miss 2 meetings, you will
go on probation. If you miss 3, you will need to reapply to become a member of Tri-M
again for the following year.
2. “I will perform at one (or more) of the Sounds for Seniors program.” This year’s dates
are Oct. 15 and April 21 @ 2:30pm. If you cannot attend either of these events, you must
make a 10 minute cd recording of yourself (alone or with a group) to send to the assisted
living program.
3. “I will help set-up for our concerts and/or host the Peak Performance Festival (April 27
and 28).” If you fail to show up for your assigned spot, then you will be on probation.
