MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
As dean (interim) of the School of Graduate Studies & Research, I direct the operations of the
unit. In this role, with guidance by the Graduate Council (advisory body), I oversee, develop and
implement institutional policies related to the areas of graduate education, academic quality of
graduate programs, certification of graduate faculty members, review of curriculum proposals,
approval of thesis and dissertation research, and graduate student recruitment, admission,
retention, graduate assistantships, academic achievement or degree completion, and more.
Essential Responsibilities (as Dean)
 Manage daily operations of the School of Graduate Studies & Research
including supervision and management of support staff
 Plan, coordinate and evaluate strategic goals for the Graduate School
consistent with the university’s strategic goals
 Provide leadership and promote development of graduate programs at
the university
 Work with the Graduate Council to develop, implement and enforce
academic policies governing graduate education at the university
Establish and uphold standards and procedures for admission,
supervision, and award of advance degrees and graduate certificates
 Participate in bi-monthly Dean’s Council meetings
 Monitor student progress towards degree completion
 Liaise with departments in academic colleges and other support units on
all issues related to graduate student services

 Provide oversight and coordinate approval graduate assistant
appointments
 Promote and assist in development and implementation of new graduate
programs
 Coordinate with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs on
matters pertaining to graduate financial support and research
 Develop online and print materials for the promotion of graduate
programs
 Prepare annual assessment reports for graduate studies and research
indicating achievement of relevant learning outcomes
 Formulate, plan and manage a budget of School of Graduate Studies &
Research (operating and graduate assistants)
 Advise non-degree seeking graduate students
 Performed other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academic
Affairs
NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS (as interim dean)
 Spearheaded successful implementation of an online system of
electronic submission of theses and dissertations at Tennessee State
University
 In concert with the Graduate Council, improved processes for evaluating
credentials of faculty seeking graduate faculty membership, updated
several policies governing graduate education, and accelerated the
approval process of course/program proposals
 Successfully spearheaded revision of numerous publications (print and
electronic) of the School of Graduate Studies and Research at Tennessee
State University which resulted in improved dissemination of graduate
education information
 Successfully wrote Compliance Report pertaining to graduate education
at Tennessee State University for the 2010 Reaffirmation of Accreditation

by the Southern Association of Colleges and School (Tennessee State
University)
 Oversaw the growth of graduate student enrollments (and FTEs) at
Tennessee State University by over 10 percent between 2008 and 2011
 Evaluated the quality of over four hundred theses and dissertations
prepared as partial requirements for advanced degrees (2008-2011)
 Chaired/presided at monthly meetings of the University Graduate
Council resulting in improvement of numerous policies pertaining to
graduate education
 Reviewed and recommended for approval proposals for graduate courses
and degree programs and eligibility of faculty for graduate faculty
membership (thus direction of graduate student research and the
instruction of graduate courses)
 Secured additional funding for graduate assistantships, provided
oversight of graduate assistants appointments, and general administration
of graduate assistantships
 Advocated for advancement of graduate education by participating in
university-wide processes in strategic planning, budget, and facilities
planning resulting to relocation of the offices of the Graduate School to a
larger space and an increase in funding for graduate assistants
 Provided and conducted oversight of retention-related workshop for
graduate students and recruitment of graduate students
 Served on various University administrative review and standing
committees through the years
 Participated in Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), Council Black
Graduate Schools (CBGS), Council of Southern Graduate Schools
