• A syllabus is document which says what
will (or at least what should) be learnt.
a) The Evaluation Syllabus

It states what the successful learner will
know by the end of the course.
It puts on record the basis on which
success or failure will be evaluated.
It reflects an official assumption as to the
nature of language and linguistic
performance.
b) The Organizational syllabus
It carries assumptions about the nature of
learning as well as language such as:
- What is more easily learnt?
- What is more fundamental to learning?
- Are some items needed in order to learn
other items?
- What is more useful in the classroom?
c) The materials syllabus
A syllabus is only as good as the interpretation that
is put on it.
the first person who interpret the syllabus is the
materials writer
d) The teacher syllabus
The teacher syllabus can influence the
clarity, intensity and frequency of any item
that affect the image that the learner
receive.
e) The classroom syllabus
Syllabus that reflects a dynamic, interactive
environment of a classroom, which affects the
nature both of what is taught and what is learnt.
f) The learner syllabus
The internal syllabus that develops in the
learner’s brain and which enables that
learner to comprehend and store the later
knowledge.
Why should we have a syllabus?
1. Language is a complex entity
2. Gives moral support to the teacher and
learner.
3. Has cosmetic role
4. Can be seen as a statement of projected
routes
5. It is an implicit statement of views on the
nature of language and learning.
6. Provides a set of criteria fro materials
selection and/or writing.
7. (Uniformity) and standardization of an
institution.
8. Provide visible basis for testing
