M arch
GRADE 3 HAPPENINGS
As M arch begins, students will find themselves participating in the
new state PARCC assessments and later complete the third marking
period. We are so proud of how our students have grown this year,
and we can't wait to help them continue this growth into the fourth
quarter!
As we reinforce our high expectations in school, please make sure
you are checking in with your child at home, too.
M arch reading lessons continue within the genre of historical fiction,
and then will lead into informational texts. Click here to access the
M CPS reading content newsletter. In writing, students have been
researching a historical topic of their choice. This month, they are
taking their research and using it to write their very own historical
fiction story!
Students will be studying fractions in math. Find the specifics via the
M CPS math content newsletter here. Third grade scientists will
explore heat energy and producing heat and light. Don't forget about
M arch's monthly project - students will create a lunchbox to turn in
to their science teachers! Since Career Day is on the last Wednesday
of the month, the due date for the project has been extended to
Tuesday, M arch 31. Click here for an electronic copy of the project.

FROM THE MEDIA CENTER...
Students have begun their study of authors in
Media-Quarter 3! We are looking at several authors
and where they get their ideas and more. We spent
Week 1 of this quarter viewing author videos to
include Jackie Woodson, Jeff Kinney, Doreen Cronin
and more. We were intrigued by the author's process
of writing. We performed an "Information experiment."
We read a great book about the Beatles, asked general
questions about them, and visited 6 different
resources to see which resource was the best for
finding information. Our personal favorites were
Britannica and Discovery Education. We also liked the
search engine called Sweet search. Students were
surprised to see that we do have a few options to
Google. :) We are reading Black Eyed Susan nominees
books. This award is given each year in the state of
Maryland. The students of Chevy Chase ES are reading
these books too so we are going to write to them.
Lastly, Geography Bee season quickly approaches. NCC
has participated in our own Geography Bee for many
years now. We focus on a different section of the
world each year-in a four year rotation. The idea is that
by the time students graduate from NCC, they have
studied the entire world! Our focus areas this year are
Australia, South America, and more. We start the
process with Geography Bee packets. Students are
encouraged to complete these packets to learn about
the countries named above. Students will have about a
month to complete the packet. A quiz will be given and
the top scorers of that quiz become that homeroom
class's team. Teams compete and we all learn a little
bit of geography!!!! Please make sure to check the
NCCnet for more information regarding the Geography
Bee which will be held in May. Packets will be
distributed in the next few weeks. Hey alright!

COUNSELOR'S NOTE
In classroom guidance, Ms. Leahy-Jones, counselor,
continued teaching students about "Appreciating
Differences/ Learning Differences". In the last week
of February, Ms. Jones, mom of Stella, came in to all
3rd grade classes to share her experiences of using
a wheel chair. The students asked great questions
and seemed to really enjoy Ms. Jones' presentation.
Thank you, Ms. Jones, for sharing your experiences
and for giving generously of your time.
