As you observed during Monday’s ―Open House,‖ we are committed to making sure your child is challenged. So, how are we keeping score of student learning thus far? Our kindergarten, first and second grade teachers used their palm pilots to assess students’ reading skills. Teachers tested students’ reading fluency, word recognition, decoding and comprehension skills and have subsequently used the data to provide targeted instruction to our young readers. Though a specific reading level isn’t required for our kindergarten readers until the second marking period, goals are in place for our first and second grade readers. First grade students are expected to read between levels 5 to 7 and second grade students, level J by the end of this quarter. While our primary grade teachers are keeping score of their students’ reading progress through their palm pilots, our upper grade teachers finished taking their students to the computer lab for the Measure of Academic Progress-Reading (MAP-R.) The MAP-R is a test given countywide to all third, fourth, and fifth grade students. A computergenerated program, the MAP-R is a reliable indicator of how our upper grade readers will perform on the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) that our students will take next spring. Just as reading targets have been established by the school system for our younger readers, targets have also been set for our older students this quarter. Third grade students need to read at a level M. Fourth grade students need to read between levels Q to R and fifth grade students levels T to U by the end of the first semester. Help us keep score of your child’s reading. Included for your review is a chart that shows grade specific reading levels for each of the four quarters. Ask your child how he/she is keeping track of his/her reading progress. Promote good reading habits. Doing so will yield positive results and foster a genuine joy of reading! Parents/Guardians! The best way that you can help your child become a better reader is to read to your child or have them read to you! Practice makes perfect! Research tells us that children also need to think about what they've read in order to full comprehend the stories they are reading. Here are some helpful hints for you to help support your child/ children at home. Primary Students (K-1) Ask your child to: *retell the story *describe the setting of the story *describe the beginning, middle, and ending events *tell you the problem in the story and how it was solved * tell you 2-3 facts that they learned (non-fiction texts) * look at the beginning of words, use picture clues, or reread the text for clarification when solving for unknown words *practice reading and writing grade level sight words Intermediate Students (2-5) Ask your child to: *describe the main idea of the story *tell you about the characters and the characters' traits *tell you a short summary of the book or chapter * tell you the most important information from the text (non fiction texts) *compare and contrast information learned in non fiction books to information learned in another non-fiction book * identify unknown words and use context clues to determine the meaning of those words *describe the author's purpose for writing the text - Mrs. Jennifer Forman, Reading Specialist ―The Reading Lady‖ Halloween Parade and Parties Planned for Friday, October 29, 2010 We will host our annual Halloween parade on Friday, October 29, 2010, on the upper field near the tennis courts at 2:00 p.m. Classroom parties will occur following the parade.
