Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart
Our physical education department is pleased to announce its hosting of the ever-popular Jump Rope for
Heart and Hoops for Heart event. The money our students raise will go to the American Heart Association
and will be used to fund life-saving research. Heart disease and stroke remain our nation’s number one and
number three killers. Needless to say, we need to teach our children the importance of heart health and staying fit.
As in previous years, our school’s participation in the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart will help us earn gift certificates
for physical education equipment. Our annual participation in this fund-raiser always promotes school spirit and helps the Knoll
connect with its community! Event days for our students are as follows:
Thursday, March 1, 2012
Fifth Grade- 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Second and Third Grade- 2:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.
Pre-K and PEP- Regular PEP schedule
Friday, March 2, 2012
Fourth Grade- 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Kindergarten and First Grade- 10:10 a.m. to 11:00
Please remember the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart pledge envelopes and money must be returned by event day. Children are not to go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations. Let’s make sure all permission slips are signed and placed
inside envelopes. Cash and check contributions are welcome. Checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association. Parents/Guardians can also raise money online by creating a website for their children by visiting www.americanheart.org/
hoops or www.americanheart.org/jump.
If you have any questions about next month’s event or willing to volunteer, please contact
Mr. Matesa, Mr. Palmer, or Mrs. Ludwig, our physical education teachers at 301-840-7112.
Your help is certainly appreciated!
We’re Ready for the Maryland School Assessment!
Our school will join other public schools in the state as our third, fourth, and fifth grade students take next month’s Maryland School Assessment, commonly called, the MSA. Earlier this week our test takers assembled into groups for a simulation
of the MSA . The benefit of engaging students in this experience was to familiarize our third grade students and refamiliarize our fourth and fifth grade students with the MSA testing format and time constraints. More importantly, we
wanted our students to apply their test-taking skills and demonstrate their mastery of subject matter. Sample MSA tasks
are available for your review at http://mdk12.org/assessments/k_8/index_c.html.
An important measure the state considers in determining whether or not a school meets Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is
student attendance, not just for those that take the MSA, but for all students! If you are the parent/guardian of a third,
fourth, and/or fifth grade student, please do not schedule vacations or doctors’ appointments during our MSA dates. Our
testing dates are as follows:
March 12 & 13
March 14 & 15
March 16 & 19

Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation is in the planning stages. Please help us
estimate the number of students who will attend kindergarten at
Strawberry Knoll during the 2012- 2013 school year.
According to the Maryland State Law, a child must be five years
old by September 1, 2012 in order to enter kindergarten for the
2012- 2013 school year. Kindergarten attendance is compulsory. Parents who do not plan
for their children to attend kindergarten at the Knoll will need to contact Mr. Kaplan after May 1, 2012 and complete an enrollment waiver.
If you have a child who will be entering kindergarten this fall, please complete the form
below, and return it to the school office by March 19, 2012. Also, if you have a neighbor
or friend who has a child of kindergarten age for fall 2010, please pass this information
sheet to them.
Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2012 and Friday, May
11, 2012. Additional information will be provided in upcoming newsletters.
Please return the bottom portion to the Strawberry Knoll Elementary School office by
Friday, March 19, 2012.
