Helpful Tips for Back to School 2012

Helpful Tips for the Opening of School
Arrival and Dismissal
Students should come to school no sooner than 8:30 a.m. However, those students
who eat breakfast at the Knoll may enter at 8:20 a.m. Upon arriving to school and
weather permitting students are to walk to the asphalt area behind the school
where they will be greeted by their teachers at 8:40 a.m. If the weather is inclement, students
arriving to school should enter the building and sit outside of their classrooms. (Fifth grade
students will report to the gym.) Students who arrive after 8:40 a.m. are still required to report to
the asphalt area. A staff member will be there to supervise students until 8:50 a.m. ALL
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE SEATED IN THEIR CLASSROOMS AT 8:50 A.M.
Afternoon announcements are made to dismiss students beginning at 3:00 p.m. To ensure a
smooth dismissal, we kindly ask you wait outdoors. We also request you not ask for your child to
be dismissed from his/her classroom after 2:55 p.m. Thanks in advance for honoring our request.
Kindergarten students must be picked up from the gym. Parents/older
siblings/daycare providers are to meet kindergarten students no earlier than
3:05 p.m.
Walker Exits:
Students who live behind the Knoll exit the building as follows:
First grade students leave through the exit opposite Mrs. Metoyer’s room.
Second through fifth grade students leave by Mrs. Williams’s office.
Students who live in front of the Knoll exit the building as follows:
First grade students leave by Mr. Kaplan’s office.
Second through fifth grade students leave by Mrs. Schoenfelder’s room.
Car Rider Exits:
First grade students leave by Mr. Kaplan’s office.
Second through fifth grade students exit by Mrs. Schoenfelder’s office. All students are to
walk single file when leaving their classrooms.
Thanks in advance for reviewing these procedures with your children!

Attendance
It’s true! Students that have good attendance do well in school. As we prepare for another school
year, we wish to remind you about the importance of regular school attendance. Teachers prepare
lessons that are sequential and specifically designed to help students become better readers,
writers, and mathematicians. When students are frequently absent or tardy, it is often difficult for
them to grasp key concepts and as such, “catch up.” Students become competent and confident
learners when they attend school regularly and on time!
We request students be kept at home only when necessary for medical reasons. We also ask that
school day appointments be kept to a minimum. When these appointments are necessary, please
return your child to school as quickly as possible so that instructional time will be minimized.
Parents of students with excessive absences and chronic tardiness will receive a letter from Mr.
Kaplan.
Lunch Prices
This year’s elementary school lunch is $2.50, student breakfast is $ 1.30 and the price of milk is
$ .60. Reduced- price lunch will remain at $ .40 and reduced- price breakfast is free. Students
without lunch money will be given a lunch until they reach a negative balance of $10.00
(owed to the cafeteria.) At that time students without lunch money will be provided a
cheese sandwich from the cafeteria. Students are required to repay the cafeteria for the
lunches given.

Immunizations
Proper documentation of required immunizations must be received before enrolling a student. If
a parent/guardian does not provide documentation of required immunizations, but presents
evidence of an appointment within 20 calendar days of the date of enrollment, the student may be
enrolled. However, if the documentation is not provided immediately following the scheduled
date, the student will be excluded from school and marked absent. Minimum vaccine
requirements are attached. A list of immunization clinics including location and telephone
numbers is also provided for your reference.
