Weekly Email 9.11.15
Hello First Grade families! We have had such a great start to this year and I look forward to working
with you and your child! Every Friday you will receive an email from me giving you information for the
following week. These emails will help guide your school conversations with your child, give you things
to work on at home, and share important dates and information with you.
Take a look at what we are doing next week!
Reading:
We will be doing a Kevin Henkes author study. We will read numerous books by him, including
Weekend with Wendall, Julius, Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, and Chrysanthemum. We will focus on
retelling important events from the beginning, middle, and end of the story. We will also ask and
answer questions about the stories.
Writing:
We will be choosing a topic and writing a personal narrative. We will focus on using uppercase letters
where appropriate, spaces between our words, and punctuation at the end of every sentence. We
will also use transition words (first, next, last) and write a closing sentence.
Math:
We will be using Base 10 blocks, Digi Blocks, and Tens Frames to represent 2-digit numbers.
Science/Social Studies:
We will discuss and compare our roles and responsibilities at home, school, and in the community.
How can you help at home?

Use the information in this email to ask your child questions about the books that we read

Practice sounding out words while writing

Read with your child nightly!
·
Your child may be coming home with Word Wall Words to work on. Please be sure to practice their unknown
words, but it is important that they are able to not only read the words, but correctly spell them when writing also!
Important Reminders:

There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 14th.
·
Back to School Night for LFI and grades K-2 will be on Tuesday, September 15th from 6:30-8:30
·
Please be sure to return any forms that were sent home the first week of school
