Weekly Email 10.23.15 Dear Families, We hope you had a great week! Stonegate Clean Up Day is tomorrow, October 24! Next week is the last week of Marking Period 1! Here’s what we will be learning: Reading: We will be asking questions to clean up confusion as we read informational texts including When Do Animals Leave Home? and Habitats. We will also ask and answer questions to determine the meaning of unknown words in a text and use sentence-level context clues to determine the meanings of words. While we have not officially begun the study of text features, we have started introducing them, as they will be a tool that students will need to know and be able to use both this year and in the future. Text features are parts of an informational text that an author includes to help readers better understand what they have read. Please see the attached list for a description of text features that we will explore in first grade. Writing: Our animal research comes to an end this week. If time permits once our animal research is complete, we will begin talking about opinion writing and how to support our opinions with facts. Math: We will continue our study of graphs this week. We will collect, organize, display, and interpret data in pictographs and bar graphs. Additionally, we will compare our data using the symbols > < = as we interpret data and ask questions based on data. Science/Social Studies: In science we will explore the purpose of camouflage. In Social Studies we will continue to learn about American symbols including the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and the American Flag. How can you help at home? Use the information in this email to ask your child questions about the books that we read and the topics that we study. Read with your child nightly!
