Weekly Email 1.11.16
Here is what we will be learning this week:
Reading:
We will be reading a variety of books about polar animals, focusing specifically on
animals from the South Pole. Students will be working on identifying the main topic and
retelling key details, along with text features, including captions, photographs, bold
words, glossary, etc.
Writing:
We will focus on specific spelling strategies this week. These include writing
words with the “bossy r”, digraphs, blends, CVC words and more! We will also
focus on conventions in writing such as correct punctuation and capitalization.
Math:
In math, we will be working on solving addition problems with three addends
(2+3+5). Students also ask questions and explain how they solved a problem
during math discussions.
Science/Social Studies:
In social studies, we will continue our study on past and present. In science, we
will continue our study of magnets.
How can you help at home?
 Use the information in this email to ask your child questions about the books
that we read and the topics that we study.
 Encourage your child to spell words with digraphs (th, wh, sh, ch), blends,
and bossy r.
 Talk to your children about how objects have changed from past to
present. If you have old phones, cameras, etc. explore them with your
children!
 Read with your child nightly!
 Practice adding with 3 addends.
 Practice writing and spelling Word Wall Words and Words Their Way word
patterns with your child.
 Do the homework with your child. The homework is aligned with the
Common Core and helps reinforce skills that will be reviewed and built on
throughout the year.
Important Reminders and Information:
 Lost and Found- Stonegate’s Lost and Found is overflowing- please visit the
cafeteria with your child or encourage your child to check the Lost and
Found at lunch to retrieve lost items.
