Weekly Email 1.15.16
Dear Families,
We had a full week of learning. Make sure to ask your child about some of the
interesting facts he/she learned about animals from the South Pole.
Here is what we will be learning next week:
Reading:
We will continue our study on animals from the South Pole by focusing on different types
of penguins. Students will continue working on identifying text features, including
captions, photographs, bold words, glossary, table of contents, labels, etc.
Writing:
We will continue to focus on specific spelling strategies. These include writing
words with the “bossy r”, digraphs, blends, CVC words and more! We will also
focus on proper nouns and nouns.
Math:
In math, we will solve addition problems with three addends (2+3+5). We will
also solve story problems with “change unknown” (ex: Sam had 3 dogs. His
mom gave him some more dogs. Now he has 8 dogs. How many did his mom
give him?)
Science/Social Studies:
In social studies, we will continue our study on past and present. In science, we
will continue our study of magnets.
How can you help at home?
 Use the information in this email to ask your child questions about the books
that we read and the topics that we study.
 Encourage your child to spell words with digraphs (th, wh, sh, ch), blends,
and bossy r.
 Ask your child to tell the difference between proper nouns and nouns and
give examples of both.
 Read with your child nightly!
 Practice adding with 3 addends.
 Practice writing and spelling Word Wall Words and Words Their Way word
patterns with your child.
 Do the homework with your child. The homework is aligned with the
Common Core and helps reinforce skills that will be reviewed and built on
throughout the year.
Important Reminders and Information:

Next week is the last week of the marking period. There will not be Words
their Way homework sent home on Monday. We will introduce new sorts
on Monday, January 25. Please use the week to work on spelling first
grade sight words.

Lost and Found- Stonegate’s Lost and Found is overflowing- please visit the
cafeteria with your child or encourage your child to check the Lost and
Found at lunch to retrieve lost items.
Have a wonderful LONG weekend and try to stay warm!
Sincerely,
