Dear Families,
Happy Thursday! We are sending this out early in case we do not have school
tomorrow because of the impending snow.
Here is what we will be learning next week:
Reading:
We will learn about the 5 senses and how our senses help us learn about the
world around us. Students will continue working on identifying text features. We
will also identify information that we learned from the pictures and text, and ask
and answer questions.
Writing:
We will write to inform after learning about North America. Students will take
notes and transfer the facts they learn to paragraph form.
Math:
In math, we will begin a unit on measurement. Students will spend time ordering
and describing the length of various objects around the classroom. They will
also compare the length of objects.
Science/Social Studies:
In science we will identify and describe Earth materials, including soil, sand and
rocks.
How can you help at home?
 Use the information in this email to ask your child questions about the books
that we read and the topics that we study.
 Encourage your child to read informational books and identify the text
features that he/she sees. Have your child explain what he/she can learn
from each text feature.
 Ask your child to compare, order and describe the length of objects
around the house.
 Read with your child nightly!
 Practice basic addition and subtraction facts. See note about this below.
 Practice writing and spelling Word Wall Words and Words Their Way word
patterns with your child.
 Do the homework with your child. The homework is aligned with the
Common Core and helps reinforce skills that will be reviewed and built on
throughout the year.
Important Reminders and Information:
 As we continue to build our fluency in math, it is very important that
students can identify sums of 10 (2 + 8, 3 + 7, etc.) and that they have their
doubles facts memorized (up to 5+5). Check out this sums of 10 game
http://www.mathplayground.com/number_bonds_10.html as well as the
game at this website (choose doubles and/or number bonds only):
http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button. Attached to this
email you will find a set of snowman number cards. Please consider
printing them and having your child match two cards that make 10. Once
he/she becomes comfortable making sums of 10, you can play memory
with the cards. There is also a sums of 10 train activity that helps build
fluency using a tens-frame. Finally, you will find doubles and doubles + 1
flash cards. They go higher than what first graders have to memorize so
feel free to begin practicing with the cards up to 5 + 5 and 5 + 6. Students
should be familiar with making sums of 10 as well as with their doubles
and doubles + 1 facts from the work that they have done at school. Thank
you for supporting your child at home!

Lost and Found- Stonegate’s Lost and Found is overflowing- please visit the
cafeteria with your child or encourage your child to check the Lost and
Found at lunch to retrieve lost items.
Have a wonderful LONG weekend and be safe in the snow!
