Dear Families, Hello! I hope you are having a great week! Please be sure to look at the important information section, there is a lot going on at Stonegate! Take a look at what we are learning next week: Reading: We will continue reading informational text and will be reading about U.S. landmarks. We will learn about Mt. Rushmore, The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Disney World. While learning about these landmarks we will identify text features, asking and answering questions, and main topic and key details. Writing: This week we will begin reading different types of poetry. We will read and write poems using alliteration (using words that begin with the same sound- tongue twisters are a great example), similes (comparing two non-related things using “like” or “as”- “She is as quiet as a mouse”), onomatopoeia (describing sounds using words- boom, moo, bam, etc) , and visual images (describing how something looks). Math: We will now be going back to addition and subtraction. We will start by reviewing the meaning of the equal sign. We will also find addends for given numbers (What two numbers can we add to make 7?), and we will review related equations and how these numbers work together. Ex: 4 + 3 = 7, 7 – 3 = 4 Science/Social Studies: In social studies we will continue our map study. We will explore with the globe, discuss continents and oceans and the parts of a map that make map reading easier. We will identify cardinal directions (N, S, E, W). We will also use the Compass Rose and symbols to locate places on a map. We will look at maps from a bird’s eye view and make our own map of the classroom. How can you help at home? Use the information in this email to ask your child questions about the books that we read and the topics that we study. Read with your child nightly! Ask your child to recall important events in books when you are reading together. Practice finding missing addends in addition and subtraction equations. Practice writing and spelling Word Wall Words and Words Their Way word patterns with your child. Do the homework with your child. The homework is aligned with the Common Core and helps reinforce skills that will be reviewed and built on throughout the year. Important Reminders and Information: Our classes will be visiting the Book Fair on Tuesday, February 23. If your child would like to purchase a book after Tuesday, please send a check in a sealed envelope labeled "Book Fair" and he/she will be able to go to the book fair during the day that he/she brings the money. If you are not able to send a check and are going to send cash, it is very important that it is in a sealed envelope and that your child is directed not to open the envelope until arriving at the book fair. It is also very helpful if you send the list of book titles that you would like your child to purchase so that a volunteer at the book fair can help him/her. Lastly, we encourage you to visit the Book Fair during Family Science Night and Multicultural Heritage Night. Thank you for your support! Multicultural Heritage Night has been postponed until Thursday, February 25th. There is still time to share your heritage at the event - including pictures of your country, share food from your culture, share a game or activity that is important to your heritage - anything kids would love! We are also looking for volunteers to help out the night of the event (middle school student are welcome). Please email Danielle Sodani ([email protected]). Our Read-A-Thon is beginning! Your child will bring home a flyer with information about the Read-A-Thon. Our goal is to have 100% participation so please go to the website listed on the flyer to chart your reading! Today you will be receiving a flyer about Ben’s Run. Please consider signing up! Spirit Wear Fridays!!! Please purchase spirit wear so that you can be ready for Spirit Wear Fridays! A flyer came home in backpack mail and the flyer is also available on our website. Please contact Jennifer Willis [email protected] and Melissa [email protected] with any suggestions or questions/concerns. Feb. 26th is an early release day- dismissal will begin at 12:55. Feb. 29th – Black History Celebration- 6:30-7:30 Please remind your child to have a book in his/her backpack to read in the morning. Have a wonderful and safe weekend!
