First Grade Weekly Email 3.11.16 Dear Families, What a busy week we have had…I hope you have all enjoyed this amazing weather! Please be sure you have sent in your child’s field trip money and permission slip…it was due today! Take a look at what we are learning next week: Reading: We will begin our author study of Melanie Watt. We will read stories such as Chester, Chester’s Back and Chester’s Masterpiece. We will ask and answer questions, discuss point of view, and have collaborative conversations about the text. Writing: We continue our study of opinion writing by reading the book What If You Had Animal Teeth? Students will decide which animal’s teeth they would rather have and support that opinion with strong reasons. We will continue practicing stating an opinion using words such as, “I think,” “I feel,” and “I believe.” Here are some sentence starters that we are using to state our opinion. Math: We will continue working on addition and subtraction strategies to solve story problems. We will solve story problems with both addends given and problems with missing numbers in all locations. Ex: Sam has 8 footballs. Rob gave him 3 more. How many does Sam have now? Sam has some footballs. Rob gave him 3 more. Now he has 11 footballs. How many did Sam start with? Same has 8 footballs. Rob gave him some more. Now he has 11 footballs. How many did Rob give him? Science/Social Studies: In social studies and science we will begin talking about helping the environment. We will discuss reasons why it is important so save the environment, ways we can do it and how we adapt to changes in the environment. How can you help at home? Use the information in this email to ask your child questions about the topics that we study. Read with your child nightly! Talk to your child about how characters in stories are feeling and how their feelings change throughout the story. Practice addition and subtraction equations with missing numbers in all positions and with the equal sign at the beginning of the equation rather than at the end. One of the most challenging types of problem is one in which the difference (answer in a subtraction problem) comes first and students need to find the whole (Ex.: 7 = ____ - 5). Practice writing and spelling Word Wall Words and Words Their Way word patterns with your child. Describe objects in your house by their material and the properties of that material. Write a letter with your child and talk about the format of a friendly letter. Mail the letter! Here is a fun song to go along with the parts of a friendly letter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNKy4hV6WnA Do the homework with your child. The homework is aligned with the Common Core and helps reinforce skills that will be reviewed and built on throughout the year.
