Second Grade – E.S.S.
What We Are Learning in Second Grade
Reading – This month we will be focusing on Informational Text. We will continue to ask and answer
questions to help clarify our understanding of a text. Further, we will use text features to help us find
answers to questions in the text. We will also focus on strategies to help us understand new vocabulary
words such as looking at the root word and using context clues.
Writing – In Writing this month we will be working on informative writing. We will focus on picking a topic,
developing points, and organizing our work. Ask your child what special place they picked to write about!
Math – In November we will continue to practice our mental math strategies for addition and subtraction to
20. We will learn how to solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems with within 100 by using models,
drawing pictures, using number lines, or thinking about place value. You can practice a problem each night
with your child!
Science – In Science we will learn how to classify objects by looking at their observable properties. Help
your child by asking them to describe objects when you go to a new place!
Social Studies – This month we will be studying geography. We will focus on the different places on Earth
such as continents, countries, oceans, the poles, and equator and practice finding them on maps
and globes.
