Second Grade – E.S.S.
What We Are Learning in Second Grade
Reading – This month we will continue to look at Literary Text by discussing characters responses to
challenges. We will begin to look at Informational Text and identify the main topic after we ask and answer
many questions to further our understanding of what we read. See if your child can identify text features
such as title, table of contents, or bold print in an Informational Text!
Writing – In Writing this month we will create an informational writing piece about healthy eating habits.
The students will gather facts from many different resources and then organize and expand them.
Afterwards, we will write our opinions on nutrition! Ask your child what new facts they have learned about
healthy eating and how they feel about it!
Math – During the end of the 1st Quarter students will begin gathering and categorizing data in bar graphs
and picture graphs. They will learn how to create and analyze the different types of graphs.
Science – In Science we are going to focus on Earth’s natural features. We will discover how the natural
features change as we look at different environments.
Social Studies – This month we will focus on the effects of our own personal choices. Help your child
understand this by asking them to describe the effect that they have when they make a
personal choice, good or bad!
