Keeping up with Kindergarten! October 1, 2015 We have had a wonderful start to this school year in Kindergarten! The students are settling in, learning the routines, and working hard each day. Homework begins this month, so please look at the monthly calendar. It includes a short activity for you to complete with your child to help get them in the habit of being responsible and doing homework. This month, we will be focusing on informational books and answering questions about key details, as well as understanding how the pictures connect to the words. Please read non-fiction books with your children at home. We will continue to focus on using different strategies to keep track of our counting, modeling numbers in different ways (pictures, tally marks, numerals), and identifying dot arrangements through 6, both familiar (like those on dice) and unfamiliar. Please take your children on nature walks and discuss the weather each day. We have been practicing the thinking and academic success skills of collaboration and analysis. Ask your child how we have been collaborating and analyzing things in school and help them think of ways to do this at home! Classroom Wish List Important Dates 2nd October -Early Release day (1:20) th October 7 – Walk to School Day October 12th – Open House, 9:25 am-11am October 16th – NO SCHOOL October 22nd– Picture Day October 30th – Harvest Day Festival We appreciate healthy snacks for the class. Along with the nightly homework activity, read with your child every day. As you read, stop and ask questions about the story. For example, “who is the story about?” or “where does the story take place?” or “how does the character feel?” As a challenge, have your child think of a question about what is happening in the book and ask you.
