September always seems like such a crazy month with lots of paperwork to fill out and things to sign up to do, plus we all have to get used to our children’s favorite, homework!! Hopefully, you have had a chance to meet our acting Principal, Mr. Meiners. He joined us on Monday, September 21st and he will be working with Mr. Nguyen and the rest of the staff to keep our school running smoothly until Mr. Forkert returns. I was very pleased to see the big turnout at the first PTA Meeting and Volunteer Fair, especially the parents who are new to the school. In Mr. Forkert’s absence, we heard from our Assistant Principal, Mr. Nguyen, approved the budget for this year, and had a brief but successful volunteer fair. If you were not able to make it to the meeting and/or volunteer fair and would like to sign up to volunteer for one of our many committees, it’s not too late! Please take a look at the Committee Chair list on the Luxmanor web site and find a committee that interests you and contact the chair(s) to offer your services. We had a great turnout for Back to School Night. Thank you to Debbie Corwin, our hard-working membership chair, and her band of helpers for manning the PTA Membership table and handing out the ever popular Luxmanor PTA Calendars to those who joined that evening or had already joined. Remember, it’s never too late to join the PTA and get your very own calendar! Membership forms can be downloaded from the Luxmanor web site. At the end of the second week we held our Annual Back to School Picnic. Vice President, Lori Scherr did a fantastic job of getting everything organized and ready to go and getting the weather to cooperate! Marcie Peters, our PresidentElect, arranged for our kids to have fun and get active with Zumba. Debra Cohen and Lesley Potash, our Bake Sale Co-Chairs, had a bountiful supply of water for our families. Spirit Wear Chair, Kate Proger, with the help of Karen October 30 Greenfeld, arranged for an on-site vendor with awesome Luxmanor gear for Halloween Parties and families to purchase! If you missed this event, you missed a great time and Parade hopefully you won’t miss it next year! October 28 California Tortilla/Baskin Robbins Night 2:00 p.m. 1st Marking Period Ends The following week, our new Diversity Chair, Nermine Demopolous, held our Luxmanor New Parent Meet & Greet Breakfast. It was wonderful to see the new parents and “old” parents mingling and socializing like old friends. What began as a new event five years ago has become a wonderful Luxmanor tradition that hopefully will continue for many years to come! … The LuxLetter, Page 2 The LuxLetter Published monthly during the school year by the Luxmanor PTA *** Principal Ryan Forkert Assistant Principal David Nguyen PTA President Debby Orsak PTA PresidentElect Marcie Peters Newsletter Editor Meta N Awuah-Offei Submissions Deadline The 20th of every month. Thanks to the efforts of Lori Scherr, we had a great turnout, and raised some funds for our school. Thanks to everybody – parents, students, teachers and staff who came out. Also on Wednesday, September 16th, members of your PTA Board met with a group from the Montgomery County Planning Department to discuss school capacity issues as they relate to the upcoming planned developments in our cluster and our concerns about how they will affect our schools. There will be a lot of development activity in our area in the coming years and we all need to be involved to help ensure positive outcomes for our schools and our children. We finished out the month and rolled into the next with our New Book Fair from September 28th – October 2nd. Co-Chairs Stacey Cooperman, Sangita Pradhan and Sheri Weiss did an outstanding job along with their dedicated group of volunteers in helping our children to find some wonderful books to buy and also raising some funds for our school. We had a fantastic Teacher Read Aloud night at the Book Fair, with many kids and some parents in their pj’s, to hear their teachers read great stories and to enjoy cookies and milk while the parents got a chance to shop for books. Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and the generosity of our families, we were able to raise some money for our school and get more books in our classrooms. With all of the welcoming events behind us, we now look to October, which will be another busy PTA month with a number of events for our school. Our first event this month will be International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 7th. Look for information coming home from our Health & Safety Chairs, Cynthia King and Wendy Hookman-Vassa. Next on Monday, October 12th, we will be hosting a Bake Sale during MCPS Open House Day so that visiting parents can have something to munch on while they’re observing their children’s classes. Debra Cohen and Lesley Potash will be looking for volunteers to donate goodies and to help man the table that day. This year, our Annual FAB Dads Breakfast is moving to Friday, October 23rd. Bruce Dincin, the chair of the Fathers Advisory Board (FAB), is looking for more volunteers to help with the breakfast. It’s a great opportunity for all of our Luxmanor guys (dads, granddads, uncles, big brothers, etc.) and moms too, to hang out with their kids from 7:45 – 9:00 am and have a little breakfast. We will be having our second family night out of the year on Wednesday, October 28th. Lori Scherr has arranged for us to receive 25% of the proceeds from California Tortilla and 20% of the proceeds from Baskin Robbins, both at Cabin John Mall, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm when you say “Luxmanor Rocks” when you order. Come out and enjoy dinner and dessert with family and friends, and also raise a little money for Luxmanor! ... The LuxLetter, Page 3 October 2015 (continued from previous page) We will end the month of October and the first quarter of the school year with one of the kids and parents favorite events, the Halloween Parade and Class Parties! We held the Room Parent Orientation Meeting in September, and all of the Room Parents have been busy planning the classroom Halloween parties, which will be held on Friday, October 30th after the school puts on its Halloween Parade on the back field. All of the children look forward to putting on their Halloween costumes and going “on parade”, and then coming back to their class for their party. You don’t want to miss it! I look forward to seeing all of you at the October events! Debby Orsak, PTA President. ****************************************************************** MEDIA CENTER HELP! Welcome to all new and returning Luxmanor families! School will soon be in full gear, and so are the opportunities for us to help improve the resources available to our children and teachers. Luxbucks enables us to take advantage of the programs offered by various businesses/merchants, to that we can earn $$ for the school without spending anything extra…just as a part of our normal daily routines… Here’s how you can participate: Keep your eyes open for a flyer in your child’s backpack, fill it out, and I will take care of registering for you at Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter and Bloom OR: 1. Register your Giant BonusCard in the A+ BonusBucks Program and designate Luxmanor, School Code 0725. This program earns CASH to the school. To register on-line go to www.giantfood.com (select A+ Bonus Bucks, Designate Schools). Last year we earned over $8,000 with this program! EVEN IF YOU REGISTERED LAST YEAR YOU MUST REGISTER AGAIN THIS YEAR! 2. Register your Safeway Club Card for their Education program and designate Luxmanor, School Code 6531272. AGAIN, even if you registered last year. YOU MUST RE-REGISTER and DESIGNATE LUXMANOR AGAIN THIS YEAR. To register go on-line to www.escrip.com. The web site will walk you through the steps to either renew your designation or register for the first time. 3. Register your Harris Teeter card with me. Send me your VIP number on the back of your store card along with your last name. I will be glad to key into their website. We earned almost $500 this past year with 57 active cards. I know there must be more active people to add to our earnings. Everyone must re-register their VIP card every year. 4. Clip/Send General Mills “Box Tops for Education” logos from MANY participating products. Each logo earns 10 cents. Besides General Mills products, some of the other products are Avery labels, Betty Crocker, Nature Valley, Pillsbury, Yoplait, Cottonelle, Viva, Poise, Hefty Ziploc, to name a few. Before you send the Kleenex box to your child’s teacher, take off the labels. 5. On-line shopping, visit Onecause.com and link to some of your favorite stores. Choose Luxmanor to receive on-line rebate. At least 400 participating merchants will donate a percentage (up to 30%) to Luxmanor. 6. Bloom grocery store now has program to earn school products. So if you forward to me your Bloom number on the back of your store card along with your last name, I will be glad to key into their website. I know there must be more active people to add to our earnings. I can’t be the only Luxmanor person who shops at Bloom. 7. Use your Target VISA Card, or apply for one. If you find yourself shopping at Target more these days, this would be a great time to open a Target account. Target will give us 1% of in store charges and ½ percent anywhere else you use your card. Apply at www.Target.com or at the store. This year, with your participation, we have the opportunity again to bring great results. The key is for each family to register/collect, get the kids involved, and get relatives, friends, co-workers and neighbors to help too! This means free cash for our school. It’s free. No cost to you! Nothing to sell! Nothing to buy! It’s like recycling … if we don’t do it, we are wasting valuable resources. We are going to buy stuff anyway, so let’s make it count! Please call Barbara McGolrick at 301-230-5914 if you have any questions. Thanks for your enthusiastic support and cooperation! The LuxLetter, Page 12 October 2015 STUDENT POPULATION GROWTH ISSUES AFFECTING THE WALTER JOHNSON CLUSTER Did you know that by 2020 (the year Luxmanor’s current 4th graders enter high school), Walter Johnson is expected to be almost 500 students over capacity? What does this mean to your son or daughter? What will this number look like for the current K-3rd graders? Can you imagine how these numbers will increase even more when major residential developments get approved such as the new Rock Spring, White Flint 2, or the WMAL land located between Democracy Blvd., Fernwood Rd., 495 and the 270 Spur? Did you know that even with expansions, most of our schools will need “portable classrooms” (trailers) within the next six years, if they don’t already have them? The Walter Johnson cluster of schools, those elementary and middle schools whose students attend Walter Johnson High School, are experiencing significant student population growth. Many of our schools are already overcrowded and the combination of housing turnover from empty nesters to families with school-age children plus additional housing development within the neighborhood boundaries that attend our cluster schools will exacerbate this condition. Classroom additions are in process or being planned for Ashburton and Kensington-Parkwood elementary schools, North Bethesda Middle School, and Walter Johnson High School. Tilden Middle School will be moved back to its former site on Tilden Lane after a major renovation that includes the incorporation of Rock Terrace School, a special education school. Luxmanor ES is also scheduled for revitalization and expansion. Tilden and North Bethesda will both be built for a capacity of 1200 students each. In addition, Walter Johnson is still in the very early stages of planning, but one option being discussed is to raise the capacity of the building to 3200 students. MCPS’s response to the overcrowding issues in our cluster is to make the schools bigger. How big is too big? Another option being considered is reopening the Woodward building, after Tilden moves out, as an additional high school. This would involve cluster redistricting. Why are we publishing this in Luxletter? What can you do? There is a lot that parents and students can do and we want to hear from you, the Luxmanor parents whose children are impacted. Get involved. Montgomery County has a well-defined stakeholder input process that involves multiple community meetings. We need your attendance at these meetings, participation in the discussions, and oral and written comments. Join our PTA!!! Our membership numbers help us when we testify on these issues before the Board of Education and County Council, and help the County PTA when they advocate with these groups, the Montgomery County Executive, our representatives in Annapolis, and Governor Hogan. Stay tuned for more information and a survey on these issues. We want to know what our Luxmanor population prefers. Additionally, last year the Water Johnson PTA cluster started a process with Councilmember Roger Berliner to identify the “disconnects” between the County’s development planning process and the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) school construction, renovation and addition process. We are into the “next steps” portion of this cycle wherein we are providing community input to Mr. Berliner and other county officials so they can help guide the County as it improves the overall process. Your Cluster Representatives this year are Debby Orsak ([email protected]) and Nermine Demopoulos ([email protected]). We volunteered to address these issues and, when you provide us your opinion on these topics, we have a better understanding of how to address the issues associated with educating our children. This is a lot of work for two people and we need your input and additional volunteer time. Thank you. The LuxLetter, Page 13 October 2015 OCTOBER NOTES FROM YOUR COUNSELOR Gloria Silverberg In October, we begin our small counseling groups for students in grades 1-5. Friendship Groups will be meeting once a week for 4 weeks to socialize, play games and strengthen our friendship skills. Banana Splits Groups will meet to share our feelings about divorce and discuss coping skills. For the month of October, these are the things that I will be working on with your children in their class guidance lessons: . Students will demonstrate that they understand the relationship between academic achievement and future success. . Students will demonstrate that they can apply study skills, effort, and persistence necessary for academic achievement. . Students will demonstrate attitudes, knowledge, skills, and behaviors to help them understand themselves and develop self-respect. . Students will demonstrate making decisions, setting goals, and taking necessary actions to achieve goals. How To Deal With Stress: The following are a few ways we can help our children deal with stress as the new school year begins. Stress is a part of all of our lives, but a new school year can bring out the worst. Helping our children learn how to handle stress now gives them the tools to handle stress as they grow. 1. Start with ourselves. Stress is contagious so as adults, we need to monitor our own lives and manage our stress. 2. Give them a voice. Give children words to express their emotions and help them understand the frustration that overtakes them. It reduces children’s stress to be able to identify what they are feeling. 3. Role Play. The unknown brings stress. Prepare your children for new situations by role playing with them so that they feel more confident in knowing what to do and say. 4. See their perspective. Make sure they have a chance to voice their viewpoint. 5. Listen. Children are ready to talk at different times. We need to be there when they are ready to talk. When our children know they are heard it reduces stress.
