Environmental Exposures to Mold
Mold - Clinical Case Studies
Presenter: Dr. Beth Baker, Specialist in Medical Toxicology
Determining whether a patient's symptoms are due to exposures to mold or damp environments can be
challenging. We will discuss guidelines from WHO, IOM, ACOEM, and other organizations regarding
health effects from mold and damp environments. Dr. Beth Baker will present several cases and discuss
when allergy testing or further evaluation may be indicated.
Mold - Indoor Air
Presenter: Dan Tranter, Minnesota Department of Health Indoor Air Unit
Mold can grow in damp homes. Mold growth should not be tolerated in homes because it can trigger
allergy, asthma or other respiratory symptoms, and living in damp buildings can eventually lead to such
symptoms in people with no current symptoms. MDH recommends homeowners conduct a careful
inspection. Professionals can be hired to assist. Certain cities and counties inspect mold complaints in
rental homes. Environmental testing for mold is usually unnecessary and can be unreliable. Mold cleanup should be done properly and safely. The underlying moisture problem must be fixed to prevent
recurrence.
