Kindergarten Newsletter February 2016 RTES Language Arts/ Reading Students will… retell key details of literary texts using story maps. describe the relationship between illustrations and the text. ask and answer questions about key details and new vocabulary in literary texts. identify and compare actions and experiences of characters in books. practice using before, during, and after reading strategies such as a picture walk, finding known or unknown words, and rereading. use consonant digraphs (-sh, -ch, -th) and blends (bl-, cl-, fl-, gl-, pl-, sl-) in speaking, reading, and writing. explore the use of short vowel sounds to create short vowel words. Math Students will… describe objects in the environment using names of shapes and describe their relative position using above, below, beside, in front of, behind and next to. identify shapes as 2- dimensional or 3dimensional. identify and describe 3- dimensional shapes. compose 2- and 3- dimensional shapes. sort shapes by common attributes. take apart (decompose) numbers up to 10 in more than 1 way. Science: We will be learning about the plants and animals that live in Maryland and comparing them to things living in other states. We will also be learning about the external features that help plants and animals survive in different environments. We will begin to learn about animal classification. Social Studies: We will begin a unit on economics by learning about workers as human resources. We will describe jobs and what is required to perform those jobs. We will learn about the resources needed to make the goods that we buy. We will learn about situations where people make economic choices. What Can We Do at Home? Listen to and read books every night. Discuss books that are read at home and at school. Choose a book and discuss how the pictures match the words on the page. Look for 2 and 3 dimensional shapes in the environment and practice saying their names.
