Provides vision and dynamic leadership to the land grant mission of the
Tennessee State University’s College of Agriculture, Human and Natural
Sciences; leads and represents the academic departments within the College, the
Institute of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Research, the Agricultural
Research and Education Centers, the Center for Prevention Research, and the

Reddy Resume
•
Administers and provides leadership within the Tennessee State University on all
College research, extension, academic programs, and financial affairs. Works
closely with the senior university administration including deans of other colleges
of the university.
•
Responsible for the programmatic leadership of the College including hiring,
placement of faculty, and budget management.
•
Represents the College to external constituents in Tennessee and on national and
international levels.
•
Works with appropriate university officials, Tennessee legislators, congressional
delegates, and other members of Congress to support the Research, Extension,
and Education budget of USDA and other Science departments.
•
Secures private endowments and increases extramural funding.
Key Accomplishments
Restructuring: The key components of the land-grant mission: teaching, research,
and extension, were integrated. Basic tenets of this restructuring included joint
appointments for faculty with responsibilities in two or more mission areas,
graduate faculty status to qualified research and extension faculty, and common
salary structure to teaching and research faculty. A new strategic plan that
envisions several new academic programs and higher levels of faculty scholarship
and student enrollment was developed. A new faculty evaluation instrument was
developed. A new Business Office was created to manage and streamline the
College’s operations including personnel, finances, and facilities. An Executive
Committee was established to develop and implement policies and procedures for
the College.
Student Enrollment: Student enrollment doubled in agricultural programs in three
years as a result of innovative recruitment strategies including summer internship
programs, Dean’s Scholars program, a graduate research assistantship program,
and increased diversity and inclusiveness efforts.
Research: Faculty Focus Groups were created to develop a new vision for
research programs. Several new research faculty were hired in national priority
areas such as biofuels. New faculty productivity goals and standards were
developed that emphasize scholarship, creativity, securing external grant funds,
publications, and excellence in teaching.
Extension: Hired several new extension faculty and agents which helped double
the county operations (12 to 30 counties) in a short period of time. This strategy
has expanded the overall outreach of the Cooperative Extension Program to
stakeholders by several-fold. Also, a close partnership has been developed with
the University of Tennessee and the County governments to improve
effectiveness of TSU’s outreach efforts.
2
Reddy Resume
External Funding: Faculty grant applications and external funding have increased
by 300%. Total research and extension dollars under the College has steadily
increased from $18 million to $46 million and annual faculty procurement of
external grants moved up from $2 million in 2008 to $12 million in 2012.
Facilities: To accommodate the rapid growth in students and faculty, physical
facilities of the College have been refurbished and remodeled; six new
greenhouses and a landscape studio were built and construction will commence
soon for a new biotechnology building and an agricultural education workshop.
The main campus agricultural research and education center is being modernized.
The College’s website has been revamped and updated on a regular basis.
Fund Raising: Alumni and legislative relations have been cultivated to effectively
implement the College’s mission. Among other things, these efforts have resulted
in an additional $1.5 million dollar annual allocation to the agricultural research
and extension budget by the state legislature. Additionally, these relationships
resulted in a major gift of $416,000 and 200 acres of prime agricultural land,
valued at $6-7 million, that was received from a single donor to establish a Center
and an endowed chair position in Sustainable Agriculture.
2001-2006
