Learning Community for Social
Emotional Learning
All students
will get to
know and
become
introduced
to Kelso and
his wheel of choices. Kelso is a frog that supports students in problem solving and making choices.
Students are excited to have a CHOICE when it comes to solving their own small problems. Students will
identify the difference between a small problem and a big problem, and what to do when something
happens. Students know to talk to a trusted adult when they are having a big problem and try at least 2 of
Kelso’s choices when having a small problem.
By October students will be able to list the 9 choices for appropriate behavior, apply the choices to the
appropriate situations, and evaluate the choices by adding or deleting options. In class we will role play
various scenarios where students must make a choice. Please talk about the choices at home and
encourage your kids to use them in family situations as well! Lots of kids might wonder if these work
with sibling problems at home, and the answer is YES!!! Here are the 9 choices we will discuss here at
school:
1. Go to another game 2. Share and take turns 3. Talk it out 4. Walk away 5. Ignore it 6. Tell them to stop
7. Apologize 8. Make a deal 9. Wait and cool off.
