THE PYP @ CGES Wednesday, November 7, 2012 7:00 PM All Purpose Room THE IB EXPERIENCE IN MCPS http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=ayDpanLPd0A&list=UU_lFLRgazwc3vttgNKtM0ww&index=1&feature =plcp VISION As an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme World School we will provide an engaging and open-minded learning community where all members collaborate respectfully to challenge and motivate one another within a safe and nurturing environment. MISSION We develop and support a successful and inclusive environment where all students actively participate in and assume ownership of their learning. As a unified staff and community, we create a rigorous instructional program, which promotes globally minded, creative, confident, and reflective lifelong learners. IB MISSION The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. LEARNER PROFILE IB learners strive to be: Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective The attributes of the learner profile express the values inherent to the IB continuum of international education: these are values that should infuse all elements of the three programmes and, therefore, the culture and ethos of all IB World Schools. IB programmes promote the education of the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth through all domains of knowledge. SMART AND SKILLED Imagine the most knowledgably and skilled person in the world? They may be a business leader, a national leader, or anyone with decision making power to change someone’s life or impact our environment. PYP focuses equally on knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes. Attitudes prepare the students to use those to make informed choices. ATTITUDES Appreciation Empathy Commitment Enthusiasm Confidence Independence Cooperation Integrity Creativity Respect Curiosity Tolerance BEFORE AND NOW ELABORATION GAME As a group, observe and describe several different sections of an artwork. 1. One person identifies a specific section of the artwork and describes what he or she sees. Another person elaborates on the first person’s observations by adding more detail about the section. A third person elaborates further by adding yet more detail, and a fourth person adds yet more. Observers: Only describe what you see. Hold off giving your ideas about the art until the last step of the routine. 2. After four people have described a section in detail, someone else identifies a new section of the artwork and the process starts over: Four more people take turns making increasingly detailed observations. Then the process starts over again, and so on, until everyone in the group has had a turn or all sections of the artwork have been de-scribed. 3. After the artwork has been fully described, as a group, discuss some of your ideas about it. For example, what do you think is going on? (and what did you observe that makes you say that?) Helpful definitions: Observe: Describe how something appears. Elaborate: Expand on something in detail. Interpret: Explain what something means. ACTION Action is the ultimate goal. We want our students to be able to use their knowledge, skills, understanding, and good character to take action that will improve the life of others and make the world we live in a better place.
