Reporting the Reading Level
Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2
As a Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) School, assessment is
integral to all teaching and learning. It is central to the IB PYP goal of thoughtfully and effectively guiding students through the five
essential elements of learning:
•
the acquisition of knowledge
•
the understanding of concepts
•
the mastering of skills
•
the development of attitudes
•
the decision to take action.
The prime objective of assessment in the IB PYP is to provide feedback on the learning process.
Assessment involves the gathering and analysis of information about student performance and is designed to inform practice. It identifies
what students know, understand, can do and feel at different stages in the learning process.
Our MCPS curriculum has been designed to teach certain standards during particular times throughout the school year. Additionally,
MCPS is utilizing a standards based reporting system for our students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grades this year. While
College Gardens students will be accessing these same standards as their MCPS peers, as an IB PYP school, these standards may be
taught and assessed at different times of the year then their MCPS peers.
While College Gardens students will be taught these same standards, as an IB PYP school, these standards may be taught at a different
time of the school year as a result of the design of IB PYP’s Six Transdisciplinary Themes.
Please note the shaded boxes on your child’s report card. The shaded boxes indicate that a score is not required on the Measurement
Topic for the respective marking period. However, due to the different sequence of standards taught at College Gardens as a result of
the IB PYP, a score may be found in the shaded box for the respective marking period, while at other times shaded boxes may not have
a score.
As always, please contact us if you have questions. Questions should be directed to our Teaching & Learning Representatives, Ms. Dian
Rubiera, [email protected], Staff Development Teacher or Mr. Michael Dushel, [email protected], IB PYP
Coordinator.
