Enjoy this summer by doing as many of these fun literacy activities as you can. Help your child keep learning this summer with some of these ideas. Cross out each activity as you do them. Bring your calendar when school starts and show your teacher what you’ve been doing this summer. Try to visit the county library to check out some great books. Travel the world this summer through books. Everyone is reading this summer. Open a book. When you read today, stop a few times and make a prediction of what will happen next. Read a book today. At the end of reading, summarize the book. Tell what it was about in as few words as possible. Look through a magazine or book. Find a picture. Tell a story about the picture. Make sure to describe the picture with lots of details. When you read today, come up with five questions you would want to ask the author. Make this a “No TV Day.” Read something instead Start a reading marathon. See if you can read all the books written by your favorite author, by the end of the summer. Take a Book Trip Make a list of all countries or places you would like to learn about. Reading Picnic Under the Stars. Take a blanket, a snack, a flashlight, and a book. Make your own joke book. Collect riddles and jokes from your friends and families. Think About where you go as you read each story or book. As you read each one. Write down the places it takes you. Books Be sure to read books at your level. It is okay to check out a book that your parents can read to you. Just take time to enjoy reading to yourself or to a family member. Remember a good reader is someone who understands what they have read! Take a WOW Walk! Take a walk. Keep a list of things on your walk you see on your walk that make you go “WOW!” How many books have you read this month? Share a favorite part with someone. Search for something tiny enough to fit in your pocket and make up a story about it. Word Game! Write an alphabetized list of the furniture in your bedroom. Cut out words from the newspaper. Send someone a mysterious message. Find a long word on the cereal box. Can you smaller words inside the bid word? Set a goal for how many books you think you can read this summer. . Read a cereal box. Tell someone what you learned. At the grocery store, pick out two boxes of cereal. Read the labels. What are the ingredients? What is the nutritional value? . Take a pail of water and a brush outside. Write anything you wish on the sidewalk. Talk about what you have written. Listen for Sounds! Go outdoors with your family in the evening. How many sounds did you hear? Make a list of the sounds. . Read your way around the world this summer! Find a reading buddy. Find someone older or younger to read with. Make a list of the things you want to do today. Make sure reading is one of them. Make a list of animals in the ocean. Sort them by categories, such as color or type of animal. Write a letter or email to a family member. Tell about your favorite book you read this summer. Think Cool! August is hot, hot, hot, so chill out with cool books. ASK a grandparent or other older adult what they used to do during the summer Keep a book in the car. When you are driving somewhere, pull it out and read it to your family. Cook Go to your favorite reading spot. Read for 15 minutes. No Electronics Day! Turn off the TV, computers, radio, etc. and read your book, magazines, and newspaper. List all of the ice cream flavors you can think of. Now put them in ABC order. . Find a cozy place to read a favorite story. Retell the story to someone in your family. Go outside! Lay down on the ground. Look up at the clouds. Describe the shapes you see Make a thank you card. Give your card to your librarian. What is your favorite song? Write the lyrics down in the form of a poem. Help make a special dish by reading a recipe. . . . Visit the Public Library. Join their summer reading program! Win prizes and get involved in all of the activities. Save for a rainy day! Prepare for a rainy day by packing a bag with fun snacks and books. When it rains, you will be ready for a fun day indoors. Research shows that students who read over the summer do better in school. Students can lose as much as 3 to 6 months of ground in their reading level over the summer. Make sure your child reads everyday. Reading to your child counts too. Read at least 15 minutes every day..
