eager third graders traversed our school to learn about the exciting opportunities available at Drew.
Pennies for Patients
4/4 –
Marking period 3 will continue through April 8th, one week beyond spring break. During the first

week of April, center students will be wrapping up their study of immigration by posing as an immigrant and

sharing journal entries that describe immigration from their homeland (Ireland, Poland, Italy, or Mexico) to pm (Grades 1, 4, and 5)
America in the late 19th or early 20th centuries.
Field trip to St. Mary’s City

During marking period 4 in language arts, we’ll begin the William and Mary autobiography unit on
7:30 a.m. arrival; 4:00 p.m.
Change. Students begin by creating a personal timeline using the photos they have brought in. Then,
students will read authors’ work as well as their memoirs to uncover how authors’ memories and experiences pickup
influence their writing. As inspired by artists and authors, students will then create their own memoir.
Book Fair – Media Center
4/18In the 4th marking period, 4-5 Math students will continue to use place value strategies to solve 44/22
digit by 2-digit division problems. As with multiplication, the emphasis is on place value understanding and

basic fact connections. Students will NOT use the standard algorithm for division. Later on, 4-5 Math

students will use benchmark and equivalent fraction strategies to add and subtract fractions and mixed
number fractions with unlike denominators. In Grade 4 Math, students will continue the Geometry

Measurement Topic by measuring and classifying angles and 2-dimensional geometric shapes. Then they

will explore decimal fractions (tenths, hundredths and thousandths) to solve measurement word problems.
In social studies, as students have been learning about the early settlements in America, our field trip Take Your Child to Work Day

to Historic St. Mary’s City will bring our state’s history to life. On this field trip, students will explore a
replica of The Dove, the amazingly small sailing ship that brought settlers to our shores in 1634, investigate a Yaocomaco witchott (long-house)
and a tobacco plantation. In marking period 4 science, our initial focus will be on rock and mineral classification and formation followed by
investigations involving fossils, weathering and erosion.
Thank you to our WONDERFUL volunteers and pie donors, Pi Day was a great day to enjoy impressive feats of memorization and eat pie.
Enjoy spring break with your child. We look forward to a very busy final quarter of the school year.
