Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School Fourth Grade Dolphin Splash Dear Center Parents, We are pleased to welcome parents tomorrow to our annual, school-wide Arts Integration Open House. In Marking Period 3, our curriculum focus is immigration, which our students are exploring through reading, writing, visual arts, and performing arts (tableau and readers’ theater). Students have begun researching immigration from the country of their novels by analyzing information from their novels and selected print and digital sources. They are discovering the push and pull factors that influenced immigrants’ decision to leave their home country and journey to America. Soon students will be researching what it was like to arrive and settle in America. Stay tuned for information about how they will present what they have learned to peers and invited guests! Important Dates 4-5 Compacted Math During March, students in 4-5 Compacted Math will begin Grade 5 math topics. Students will learn the standard algorithm for multiplication and compare it to the Principal’s Coffee place value and area models studied in recent weeks. Students will then use a variety of strategies to 2/26 9:00 – 9:30 find the volume of rectangular prisms, as well as use grouping symbols (parentheses, braces, and brackets) to write and interpret numerical expressions. Students will then extend their Arts Integration Open 2/26 understanding of place value to examine decimals in the thousandths position and will use place House 9:30 – 12:00 value understandings to explain patterns observed when adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing numbers expressed to the thousandths place. Early Dismissal 2/26 Grade 4 Math Students in Grade 4 Math will use visual models such as rulers, number lines, 1:20 pm and fraction bars to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. They’ll also multiply Progress Reports Come common fractions and whole numbers. Students will solve word problems involving time, distance, 3/3 and mass, and, at the end of the marking period, begin studying geometric concepts such as lines Home (perpendicular and parallel), angles, and the properties of geometric shapes. Reading Night 7-8pm 3/11 Parents, we’d also like to extend a HUGE thank you to those of you who contributed to the Valentine’s Day celebration, to those who volunteered their time, and to Mrs. Dennison for PTA Meeting 7-8pm 3/15 coordinating the event.
