Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School
Fourth CPHG Dolphin Splash
Dear Parents,
November was a short, busy month filled with exciting learning opportunities. Your children were so proud to
have you attend their first student-led conference and listen to them present their data. Their conference
reflections show that, in addition to their pride, students enjoyed leading their own conference. Thank you,
parents for your engagement and support of our student-led conferences. We enjoyed meeting with you and
hearing your thoughts about your child’s progress.
This month, students will become playwrights as they work with our 4th grade Artist in Residence. John
Morogiello, a playwright, will conduct a 7-day workshop with each 4th grade class – a process that will
culminate in a reader’s theater performance. Under Mr. Morogiello’s guidance, each 4th grade group of
students will write and edit a script involving a Native American myth or legend. Having worked with Mr.
Morogiello previously, we expect high student engagement throughout the process.

American Indian tribes in different locations of the United States. In December our focus in social studies will Reader’s Theater
shift to early exploration of the Americas where we’ll analyze explorers’ motivations and what led to the early

settlements in America. In science, students are defining ecosystems, analyzing human impacts on the
Cafeteria
environment and preparing to conduct experiments on the effects of pollutants on vegetation. In 4/5 math,
students will be comparing fractions using reasoning strategies, and adding and subtracting fractions. During
Winter Break
January, our focus is geometry. In grade 4 math, students are applying strategies to solve measurement
problems (area, perimeter, time, metric, and customary units). December’s focus is division – using strategies to solve problems.
