Grade 3 Dolphin Splash
Dear Parents,
Important Dates
As the excitement from the Holiday season approaches, third graders are in full swing learning many vital
skills and strategies. During marking period two, we are focusing on the character trait of
RESPONSIBILITY. We are taking time to discuss what responsibility looks like and sounds like both in
and outside of school.
Being Responsible:
Being responsible means taking care of what you need to take care of. This can include many things, such
as doing homework or completing chores at home. Responsible third graders know what is expected of
them and work hard to take care of their responsibilities. You can help your child to become more
responsible at home by giving them a job with clear expectations and allowing them to meet the
expectations on their own. Be sure that they complete the task in a timely manner.

Being responsible also includes taking responsibility for your words and actions. Students are learning
that every choice has a consequence, some positive and some negative. A responsible third grader makes choices that will result in positive
consequences. An example of this may be staying focused and working hard on an assignment which earns a “Proficient” grade. When choices are
made that result in a negative consequence, responsible students take ownership for making the choice and learn from their mistakes. You can help
your child at home by discussing the difference between positive and negative consequences.
Special Thanks!
Thank you to the parents/ family members who took the time to talk with your child’s teacher at Report Card Conferences. Parent-Teacher
relationships are vital. It gives students the best possible supports for success in school.
Important Reminder:
Third grade students will be visiting the University of Maryland on December 3, 2015. We will be spending the majority of the time outside. Please
help your child to be responsible by remembering to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Students will also need a bagged lunch that
day.
