Drew students are off to a great start in the music room! Curriculum objectives for
Kindergarten includes experiencing the steady beat of music, and identifying music
opposite; fast/slow, loud/soft, high/low. First grade delves deeper into those same
objectives and learn to categorize classroom instruments, and to play specific rhythms
and melodies on them. Second graders springboard off of first grade objectives and
moves ahead to identify by sight and sound orchestral instruments. This will prepare
them for a field trip in late fall to The Music Center at Strathmore where they will listen
to a concert performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Third grade focuses on
conducting in a variety of music meters, folk dancing, and creating short repetitive
music sequences (ostinato) to accompany a song. Fourth graders take a look at the
role of music in Native American cultures, analyze small parts (phrases) of a musical
section and label as repeating or contrasting, and sing a 3-part round with good vocal
tone production. A performance showcasing these skills is being planned for the
November PTA meeting. Fifth grade music objectives include conducting, playing
chords to accompany a song, blending voices in singing groups, and performing folk
dances and songs from The Revolutionary Era. The art team will work with the 5th
grade team as students learn about The Revolutionary Era. These skills will be
showcased at a wax museum performance in late October.

Happy New School Year Drew Artists, Here is what we will be learning this quarter.
Kindergarten will create art room routines by answering: How does looking,
listening and following routines help us learn?
First grade will review safety and responsibility. Using inspiration from artist, we
will create personal pinwheels for peace by using line, shape, color and texture to decorate
them. They will be displayed on Friday Sept 19th in honor of international Peace day Sept
21
Second grade will look at how demonstrating effective teamwork helps us learn.
Also, what influences the theme of an artwork and how the artist can express meaning?
Third grade will review and explore art elements and design principles, as well as
the primary and secondary colors. In addition to they will be studying folk and fine art.
Fourth grade will create original and functional clay whistles. Using animal designs,
shapes, form, line combinations and symbols that are inspired by Native Indian art.
Fifth Grade will explore what influences the theme of a piece of art. How artists can
expresses ideas and feelings through their work. For International Peace Day, they will
express their own ideas and human experience through their own personal style
From the Media Center…
Welcome back to another exciting year. We have many new books, both fiction and nonfiction,
for our students to read. All students are scheduled to regularly visit the media center for book
exchange, but they may also drop-in for exchange with their teacher’s permission.
Besides listening to some excellent literature, we will be working on a variety of research
projects from our Curriculum 2.0. Kindergarten students are learning about library routines, and
how to tell the difference between fiction books and nonfiction books. First Grade students will be
learning how to ask questions that relate to their classroom study of how people meet their needs,
wants, and contribute to the community. Second Grade will be exploring resources to build
background knowledge on nutrition and healthy eating habits to support writing in their classroom.
Third Grade classes will research facts and information that addresses the need for actions they
could take that contributes to a thriving community.
Fourth grade students will be researching the Woodland Indian culture and Greek Mythology.
Fifth grade students will research alternative forms of energy that could be used to power an
amusement park.
The logins and passwords for our online resources will be coming home soon. Please put this
resource in a safe place for future reference. Take some time to sit down with your child and
logon to these databases to see what is available. You will find resources for elementary-age
children and even adults! Some of these resources are made available through the State of
Maryland, and some through Montgomery County Public Schools.
Happy reading!

Instrumental Music – Ms. Krohn
The instrumental music students are preparing for their first lessons of the school year. Our new
beginning students have been given the opportunity to see and try out different instruments before
making their final decision. Lessons will begin at the end of September.
Our advanced students will get to experience playing in small ensemble settings as they return to
lessons. This will start to prepare them for middle school and for future performances. Make sure if
you haven’t already, get out to the store and get the rental instrument and start reviewing previous
material to be prepared for the first lesson with instruments.
