(Power Point 19.3)
Transportation:
‘the means to reach the destination
and also the means of movement
at the destination’ (Burkart and Medlik)
(Power Point 19.4)
For short-haul destinations, transport may
represent up to 55% of the total cost.
For transport at destinations, it may reach
to 15% of international visitor expenditure
within a country such as Indonesia.
(Power Point 19.5)
Visitor’s choice of mode of transport is
affected by:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
distance and time factors
status and comfort
safety and utility
comparative price of services offered
geographical position and isolation
range of services offered
level of competition between services
(Power Point 19.6)
Road transport
• It ranges from caravans, trailers, cars, coaches
• It is dominated by motor cars and coaches
• The car is almost the perfect tool for providing
door-to-door flexibility, giving views of the
landscape and a means of transporting
recreational equipment
(Power Point 19.7)
Rail transport
•
•
•
•
It needs longer time
It is for shorter distance than air transport
It iss suitable for city center to city center
For longer distance, seen to be too cumbersome
and tiring
• It provides the notions of adventurism and
sightseeing
(Power Point 19.8)
Air transport
•
•
•
•
It is attractive because of its speed and range
It offers status
It saves valuable work time
The majority of travellers are visitors,
diplomats, crews
(Power Point 20.1)
Sea transport
• It is divided into short sea ferry transport,
ocean-going cruises, inland waterway craft, and
small pleasure craft
• Geographical factors tend to determine the
provision of ferry transport
• Hydrofoil and hovercraft tend to be faster than
conventional forms of ship technology
(Power Point 20.2)
Elements of transportation
1. The way:
- Roads, raiways and inland waterways restrict vehicles to movement to
a specific pattern, while air and sea allow flexibility
- For roads, railways and inland waterways; the availability of the way
is very important
2. The terminal: The simplest is parking for private cars while the most
complex is an airport
3. The carrying unit:
- It is the actual media which facilitates the movement
- Vehicles need to be altered easily and quickly to accommodate
changing tourism demand
4. The motive power: It is closely related to the capacity, type of the
carrying unit, demand, and the desired speed
and range of the vehicles
(Power Point 20.3)
Terminals, especially airports, have become
not only design pieces in themselves,
but also the center of hub and spoke traffic.
In some cases they have grown to the size
of a small town to deal with transit traffic
(e.g.: Changi airport, Singapore)
(Power Point 20.4)
International tourist movements
and transport for tourism
have always been affected
by the activities of governments.
(Power Point 20.5)
Airlines are important within
the national economy for foreign exchange and
fare payments from foreign travellers.
Therefore, airlines are generally owned
by the state, are subsidized by governments,
become the symbols of prestige,
and fly the colors of the national flag.
(Power Point 20.6)
Transport for tourism operates
within a competitive political
and economic environment,
so it has been regulated and controlled
by governments.
