Mission Statement:

Patrols are responsible for:

Ensuring safe crossing for fellow students.

Ensuring safe walking in the school hallways and staircases.

Ensuring safe crossing procedures for fellow students.

Ensuring safe entrance and exit lines on and off the busses.

Reporting information which will identify students who conduct themselves in an unsafe manner.

Reporting information which will identify vehicles threatening safety at arrival and dismissal.

Conducting themselves as positive role models for fellow students.
Bus Patrols
Arrival:
Two or more patrols may be assigned to duty at each morning bus stop. Each patrol is assigned to a bus stop
close to his or her home. Guidelines for bus stop patrols follow:
• Be on time to your post.
• Keep students out of the street.
• Inform students about inappropriate behaviors that will endanger themselves and others.
• Warn students a second time before reporting them.
• Use good common sense in dealing with the people at your stop.
General:
Each bus has three patrols. Posts are in the front, middle, and back of the bus.
• The front patrol helps children get on and off the bus. The front patrol counts the students as they
get off the bus when they arrive at the school in the morning.
• The middle patrol helps students and keeps order.
• The back patrol is posted at the emergency door at the rear of the bus. The back patrol assists
students exiting at the rear of the bus.
Walker Patrols
When on duty, walker patrols observe the following:
• Stand one step back from the curb, facing the street.
• Give the arms-stretched signal for schoolmates to wait in back of you on
• Watch for a safe gap in traffic.
• Step aside, watch for turning cars, motion to schoolmates to cross the street.
• Return to arms-stretched position facing the street.
*Patrols are to be at their posts at least five minutes before the student flow begins, and are to remain at their
posts until all students have been safely helped across the street.
Hallway / Stairway Patrols
Promptly arrive to your assigned location and observe the following:
 Position yourself in the center of the hallway creating an imaginary traffic line.
 Respectfully remind students to walk, not run.
 Respectfully ask students to stay to the right side of the hallway.
 Respectfully remind students to keep talking to a minimum.
 Respectfully ask students to walk down the staircases.
Kindergarten Patrols
Patrols will be responsible for getting kindergarten students, on your bus, to their assigned lines during
morning arrival, and you will be responsible for working with their classroom teacher in picking them up in
the afternoon for dismissal.
Flag Patrols
Patrols will raise and lower the school flags daily depending on the weather. These patrols will learn the
proper technique and etiquette for handle and folding the US and State Flags.
Patrol Discipline Policy
All patrols are expected to be responsible students and role models. Each patrol will begin with a
probationary status. Those who demonstrate responsible behavior will be eligible to maintain their
patrol badge after the first 6-weeks of school.
All patrols are expected to consistently follow the Lakewood ES behavior expectations in all school
environments. A patrol may be put on probation if these expectations are not met. This can be determined
by the principal, assistant principal, teacher, or patrol sponsor
A Patrol on Probation:

Turns in his or her belt and badge to the patrol sponsor for the probationary period determined by
the administrator.

The patrol’s duties will be assumed by a designated patrol selected by the patrol sponsor.

A phone call to the patrol’s parents explaining the probation and the reason for taking the action
will be made.

The probationary period lasts three weeks.
This gives the student time to improve behavior, grades, or whatever problems caused the probation. The
period of probation is monitored by the patrol sponsor, teacher, and administrators with the expectation that
the student will improve and resume a responsible position.
If, after a second probationary period, a patrol continues to demonstrate an inability to uphold school
behavior expectations, suspension from the patrol force can occur. This will result in a change of their SOS
duties. The decision is made on a case-by-case basis by the administration in cooperation with the patrol
sponsor and teachers.

Reminders for Good Patrol Operation

10. Remind classmates of safe walking rules without being “bossy”.
11. Give correct crossing signal to classmates.
12. Obey rules of the Patrol, School, and Home.
13. The Three Main Functions of the Safety Patrols are to: instruct,
direct, and control.
14. I will not stand or walk on the bus when it is moving.
I have read and understand the duties and responsibilities of being a Lakewood patrol and will pledge to do
my best to follow the pledge and outlined responsibilities.
