WEEKLY
UPDATE
Greenwood
Elementary School
Brookeville, MD
5/13/16
Second Grade
Reading
Students are reading biographies to locate
key facts or information from non-fiction
text efficiently. Students should be able to
describe specific points made by the author
using key details and reasons from the text.
Students must know how to use various
text features and images to gain meaning.
Math
We continue to develop understanding of
subtraction within 1000. We are
concentrating on decomposing 3-digit
numbers with a zero in the tens place, for
example: 301-128 =__. This concept is
more abstract and can be difficult for
students to grasp. We are building
understanding by using concrete models
and drawing models with base tens blocks
before recording a written method. Next
week, we will use various strategies to
determine missing digits in equations.

Science
Caterpillar Update… Most of our
butterflies have now emerged from the
chrysalises. It has been an exciting week,
seeing this process happen right before our
eyes. We have also, created a life cycle
wheel and designed our t-shirts to
represent our learning of the life cycle of
the Painted Lady Butterfly. Next week, we
will release our butterflies outside!
Social Studies
Social Studies and reading are
closely integrated. At this time, we
are reading biographies about
famous Americans who have
demonstrated effort, motivation,
and persistence in reaching their
goals. We are also using artifacts
(photos, stamps, paintings, letters)
to gather additional information
about these people. For some, we
are making timelines of important
events in their lives.
Writing
Students are beginning to write
personal narratives to explain a
personal achievement they are
proud of. They will share with us
how effort, motivation, and
persistence help them meet their
personal goals! We will take this
writing piece through all stages of
the writing process.
