WEEKLY
UPDATE
Greenwood
Elementary School
Brookeville, MD
5/6/16
Second Grade
Reading/Writing
Students have finished writing and
typing their original poems. They will
publish and record one of their poems in
a media presentation with Mrs. Corrado.
In addition, we’ve been reading Junior
Great Book stories such as The Jade
Stone and The Wedding Basket. This
rich literature has allowed us to recount
stories from other cultures while
expanding our vocabulary. We have
been asking and answering questions as
well as determining the central message
or lesson of each story. Students have
been considering the ideas and remarks
of others while participating in shared
inquiry discussions.
Math
We are working to develop understanding
of subtraction within 1000. We are
concentrating on subtracting 3-digit
numbers from 3-digit numbers with
decomposing a ten and/or a hundred. We
are using various strategies such as: using
concrete models, drawing models with base
tens blocks, making number lines, counting
up, and using the break-apart strategy to
solve subtractions problems. These
strategies help students build a deeper
understanding of the concept of
subtraction. We do not teach students the
standard algorithm (borrowing, carrying) in
second grade.
Thank for all of your kindness
and appreciation this week!
Science
Caterpillar Update… Many of our
caterpillars have now changed into
the chrysalis. We have moved them
into the flight cage as we anxiously
wait for the butterflies to emerge!
Social Studies
Students have begun examining
multiple resources, including
biography books, video, Pebble Go,
and other artifacts to gather and
interpret information about the past.
Specifically, we studied how the
actions of historical leaders such and
Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass,
and Sojourner Truth demonstrated
effort, motivation, and persistence to
make a difference in the lives of
others.
