WEEKLY UPDATE Reading Greenwood Elementary School Brookeville, MD 4/ 29/ 2016 Second Grade This week we have focused our reading instruction around the book, Boy, Were We Wrong About Dinosaurs by: Kathleen V. Kudlinski. Students have been asking and answering who, what, where, when, why, and how questions to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Students are examining multiple texts and images to deepen their understating of a topic. Also, students are strengthening vocabulary by using context clues and dictionaries to complete vocabulary word maps. Students should be able to explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a text. In addition, students have discovered that some of our original thinking about dinosaurs has changed with further scientific research and investigation. Science Our caterpillars are growing fast! Our Painted Lady caterpillars have grown so much! We each have two caterpillars at our desk, so we are able to observe our caterpillars molting and spinning silk webs. They are big enough now for us to identify their many parts and will soon form a chrysalis. Ask your child about the purpose of the bristles, spiracles, prolegs, true legs, mouth, simple eyes, and spinneret. Math Students have been using a variety of strategies to add or subtract 3-digit numbers. Students are using base ten blocks to model composing or decomposing a ten or a hundred. Then, they record written methods using drawings of base ten blocks. Also, students are generating their own number lines as a strategy to add or subtract. Students will continue to use strategies based on place value to identify relationships between addition and subtraction. Please continue to practice basic facts and fact families at home to increase speed and accuracy on Mad Minutes. Writing Our poetry is “taking shape”. Students have been enjoying writing their own concrete, cinquains, acrostic, and free verse poems. Their skill at including rhyme, rhythm, repetition, metaphors, similes, and alliteration in their poetry is increasing as well. We have begun typing some of our poems and look forward to publishing them in a media presentation with Mrs. Corrado!
